The tragedy of 'Den Den' ship which sank near Tannirbavi beach in the city a week ago has still remained fresh in the citizen's memories. The body of missing sailor Tedesse Berikat (42) was found by the shores of Tannirbavi on Monday June 25 morning.

The ship that sank ufortunately led visitors in large numbers to have a look at the wreckage. On the other hand, the Nagarjuna thermal power project is making a headway to reach the final stage of generating power, despite protests from the locals at Nandikur near Udupi.

At the meantime, cricket celebrity Ravishankar Jayadrath Shastri of Mangalorean origin, popularly known as Ravi Shastri, along with his family visited the Shri Vishnumurti Temple at Karvalu, a small village in Yarlapadi in Karkala taluk near Mangalore.

This week witnessed a second painful episode. Fr Sylvester, the head of the Carmel Ashram at Katkere, Koteshwara near Kundapur along with two other brothers and the cook were assaulted by a Hindu fundamental organization led by one Ramanna Shetty on Monday June 25 morning. To protest against the incident,  on Wednesday June 27, over 5 thousand people gathered near Shastri Circle, in Kundapur.

Students at Their Best

An open rapid chess tournament was organized at the Karnataka Bank Employees' Union auditorium at Bejai here on Sunday June 24 by Subramanya Sabha Centenary Celebration Committee in association with South Kanara District Chess Association in which Gahan M G of Canara High School, Dongerkery won the championship.

Ester Valerie Noronha has been hitting news headlines for quite sometime now with her power-packed performances.  Whether it is singing in Konkani musical nites or staging Bharatanatyam shows, playing piano, she has been giving her best.  Only a sometime ago that she had made her Bharatanatyam arangetram.  Now she is all to make her rangapravesham in Carnatic Classical vocal music on Sunday July 1

The students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are making the city proud.  Like them, there are various talented children in the city. Many children exhibit their talents, and win hearts of several peope and make their parents, teachers, and schools / colleges proud. But ther are a few among talented children, who hide their talents because of fear or shy nature.

Each and everyone in this world is blessed with different talents but there are some who are blessed with unusual or out-of-the-way talents. If Gahan is a chess champion, Ester can be termed a genius, a girl born with music in her blood. There are many others in this city blessed with numerous talents. Such students will also help in setting an example to other students and such talented children should be role models for students.

Government at Its Service

A programme was organized to distribute free uniforms, books and umbrellas to the students of Ganapati Aided Higher Primary School on Thursday June 28 in the Annapurna Hall of the school in Mangalore. Elsewhere, members of Mennabettu Panchayat distributed school note books to the poor and the needy students of St Mary’s Higher Primary School of Kinnogoli near Mangalore recently.

Poor and needy people are now getting assistance from the government. It is a good indication of positive social concern. Members of panchayat, municipality and corporation are now providing benfits to these students and rendering free education to some of the studets who are ecnomically backward. But the government should provide some more benefits to those needy people, who are not even able to work, especialy those who are physically weak, old and the handicapped.

More than 50% of the peope residing in coastal Karnataka are poor and downtrodden, there are some who find themselves difficult to manage a sigle day's meal. These people should get assistance from the government. Government is doing its best to improve their lot but there are still may needy people in the country who  have never got any kind of assistance from the governement.

Wider Roads Leading to Greater Risks

The Shiradi Ghat has been put off-limits to LPG bullet tankers to facilitate repair works till July 21.The district administration had already banned heavy vehicles like oil, petrol tankers, timber, granite and iron ore trucks, and articulated vehicles from June 22 for a month. With the new order, only unladen heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply on the road.

The roads in the coastal Karnataka are getting repaired. They are getting smoother and wider. But smoother the roads are, the higher is the risk involved. Recently, if we have heard many accident cases, it is because of reckless driving. Even when the roads were worse, the bus and truck drivers were driving rashly thus leading to accidents. What will be the situation when the roads are improved and made smoother? Roads should be improved, this does not mean that the drivers should drive rashly. They should be careful enough and try to convey their passengers safely to their destinations. This will help in minimizing accidents.

Never-ending Tragedies

The bodies of three sailors who died in the Den Den ship tragedy have been sent to Eritrea through air cargo. The bodies were sent to Mumbai by Jet Airways flight from where further arrangements were made to send the bodies to Eritrea.

The sinking of the 'Den Den' ship reminded us of the 'Titanic' which sank in the past century. All those who took trouble to trace the missing sailors as  well as to save those about to sink with the ship deserve praise. Although a small number, the crew in the ship may have had the same feelings of those who went down with the Titanic. titanic were facing when the ship was about to sink.

Requirement of More Konkani Plays

The muhurtam of new Konkani play 'Bonglo' by Nellu Permannur was held in Mangalore on Thursday June 28. The play will be staged for the first time on August 5 evening at the monthly theatre at Kalaangann.

We rarely find Konkani plays. More and more Konkani plays should be made. When plays of other langages are doing so good then Konkani palys are sure to do good. Wherever we go we find people communicating either in Tulu, or Kannada or English. Even the Christians sometimes communicate among them in these languages. The being forgotten as a language altogether. Konkani films should also made, at least one a year. This could make the language more popular and save it from its current slow-death trend.

Everlasting Enmity

A few locals near Navunda in Kundapur have caused inconvenience to the general public by blocking the road which comes under Gram Panchayat (GP) administration, on the pretext of past enmity with an educational institution.

Most of the human beings in this world are blessed with the nature of 'jealousy', which usually leads to enmity and personal grudge.  Those entertaining grudges are most likely to explode with revenge one fine day. People with forgiveness are fewer in number these days.  The world itself has turned cruel and we find people with cruel thoughts in their minds.

Enmity sometimes makes people to kill others. There are some people who kill their own relatives,  maybe their own brother, mother, father, sister, husband, wife etc motivated by greed for property and riches and sometimes for other reasons. This enmity has been prevailing over past many centuries and it will continue till the end of the world.

Expenditure in Excess of Earnings

A protest was held against the hike in the price of bus passes for students here, on Saturday June 30.

The bus fares have risen incredibly. Out of them, the express bus fares are unbeleivable. A ticket from Mangalore to Udupi or vice versa costs Rs 33. Less changed is returned if a 100-rupee note is given.  And people who travel daily by bus find it difficult to pay these prices, the students get a concession where they have to pay half of the fare. But what the employees? They spend half their salary on bus fare. Their daily expenditure sometimes exceeds the salary earned. So in such a situation no one will be able to travel daily by buses. They should find some other means either owning private vehicles or opting to stay close to their work place. The bus fare should be reasonable so that everyone would find it convenient to travel by buses.
