Yettinahole stir prompts CM to revive Paschima Vahini project

Bengaluru, Sep 22 (DHNS): The State Cabinet meeting on Monday is learnt to have witnessed arguments and counter-arguments among a section of ministers regarding the Yettinahole project, prompting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to direct officials to revive the Paschima Vahini project.

The Paschima Vahini project envisages harnessing the west-flowing rivers. The government hopes implementing that project will mollify those opposed to Yettinahole project in coastal districts.

According to sources, ministers from the coastal region Ramanath Rai and U T Khader told the meeting that they were unable to face the ire of the people back home, against Yettinahole project. The project envisages supply of drinking water to Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru and Ramanagar districts.

The protesters feel the project will dry up their lifeline - the Nethravati river - and trigger a water crisis.

Water Resources Minister M B Patil is learnt to have said that the government cannot go back on its commitment to implement Yettinahole as the work on the Rs 10,000-crore project had already begun. Siddaramaiah intervened and said the government would take steps to revive the Paschima Vahini project.

The Paschima Vahini project proposes to supply water for both drinking and irrigation purposes to Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts by tapping 22 west-flowing rivers, including Nethravati, Sharavati, Chakra, Swarna and Kali. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 750 crore.

Social impact

Jayachandra said the Cabinet gave its nod for Social Impact Assessment study of Yettinahole project.

Ramanath Rai said he could not differ with the government stance. Representatives of various organisations agitating against the Yettinahole project would meet the chief minister and water resources minister.

The government would put forth its views and allay fears about the project, he added.

To show honesty Janardhana Poojary should quit Congress.Otherwise it is nothing but a drama which he usually conducts in the name of press meet every month. Both BJP & Congress are the two faces of the same coin. Let him contest as an Independent in the next election.

Mr. Janardhan Poojary appears to be the only politician who is interested in the scrapping of this project. He is the only shining star in this dark sky of politics. People should forget all the differences they might have with him and support him. Let us hope he takes the lead and this movement culminates in the ping of this ill advised project.

Hats off to Sri Janardhana Poojary for his opposing the Yettinahole project and taking on Congress Minister/MLAs of the coastal region unmindful of damage to him politically by doing so.I hope that people from DK who always criticised Poojary will now rally behind him in this struggle of opposing Yettinahole project.I complement him for his views in support for the people of Tulunaadu......

True. But what we need is for Yetinahole Project to he stopped. If it is stopped then the other Paschima vahini project need not be implemented at all as there would be no water shortage. Let the rivers run their ordained course. Why are ordinary men trying to change the course of rivers, building hundreds of dams, destroying forest cover and wildlife? If they continue with such things uttrakhand style disaster is bound to happen. How long will nature tolerate such things?

Nowadays Govt are announcing so many new multi crores projects, people feel they will be displaced and affected.

Therefore all these apprehensions and oppositions.
Centre and State govt should make people fully aware, impact of these projects.
No project should ever be implemented in haste.
