Bantwal, Sep 25: Padmanabh Nayak, a member of gram panchayat who allegedly killed his wife Pushpavathi (34), daughters Pruthvi (9) and Poorvi (7) before committing suicide by hanging, suffered from psychological problems, reliable sources said.
Padmanabh (48), a soft spoken and popular man without any criminal record allegedly committed the heinous crime on Wednesday, September 23 at Manchi, Ira near Bantwal.
As per the villagers, Padmanabh of late had behaved in a different manner. He walked as if someone was following him. Sometimes when he went to the shop near his house, he would run instead of walking as if someone was chasing him, they said.
Besides this, Padmanabh mentioned to quarry workers many times that he would not live long. He even said if he died, his wife and children would not be able to live on their own, and hence he would kill them before dying. The workers did not take him seriously as it was routine to hear these words from him.
The incident came to light when Padmanabh’s brother's wife came to his house. The bodies of Padmanabh’s wife and children were badly wounded and lying in a pool of blood, which indicated that he killed them mercilessly. His mother who lived with him was sent to his brother’s house on the previous day.
Police sources had said that there was marital discord between the couple, but this seems to be untrue. Padmanabh believed that he was a victim of black magic. Since his wife had soap allergy and her fingers would swell if she went for milking the cow, he thought that it was due to black magic done against his family, the locals said.
Circle inspector K U Belliappa quoting forensic experts is also said to have voiced the opinion that Padmanabh must have killed his wife and children due to psychological problems,
To confirm that Padmanabh suffered from psychological problems, police are verifying the dairy which he used to write on an everyday basis from sometime. A month back Padmanabh had tried to commit suicide by hanging but he survived the bid. Though he was known to be polite to people, he did not mingle much with the neighbours, the villagers said.
In the death note, Padmanabh reportedly said that he was taking the step of his own will. The death note also requested that the insurance money should be paid to his mother and brother.
