Udupi, Sep 25: In a tragic incident, a young man passed away after accidentally falling into a pond near Kurkalu-Manipura bridge near Katapady here on Friday September 25.

The deceased has been identified as Vijith Suvarna (30), a resident near Manipura Math. He was the son of Nagesh Suvarna and Meenakshi.

Vijith and his friends had gone to the pond for a bath. While his friends were swimming, Vijith sat on a concrete slab next to the pond, as he did not know swimming.

All of sudden, the concrete slab broke away and Vijith who was sitting on it fell into the pond. He was immediately washed away by the currents.

Vijith's friends Vishwanath Suvarna and Praveen Kurkalu who were nearby dived into the pond to rescue him, but they too were pulled away by the force of the water. The other people who were nearby rushed to their rescue and managed to bring them ashore.

On learning about Vijith, expert swimmers arrived at the spot and brought him out of the water. He was rushed to hospital, where he breathed his last.

Vijith was the president of the youth wing of Manipura Sri Narayana Guru Dharmapalana Sangha, and a member of Billava Sangha Chende troupe.

Shirva police arrived at the spot and registered a case.

A concrete slab even if it breaks it will not break fully as there are iron rods inside the slab, so chances of breaking in half is less, something is fishy in this incident. Moreover, if it is pond there wont be strong current...and all of them were swimming when he fall down...

You are right, the slab possibly was made without any bars (with minimal cement in mix) and gave way just like how a biscuit crumbles, it needs to be investigated and the guys who manufactured and certified the 'slab' should be brought to justice!!

What if you were sitting on that slab.

A young life is lost in this tragedy. Entire family was dependent on him. Let's be sensible when we comment on such issues.

    RIP Vijith

what a sad and unusual death.Poor fellow without checking sat as anyone would do.at this Young Age unexpected death.May his Soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to his Family. Many times People do wrong by first trying to take to Hospital.Instead in such emergency time please give first aid on the spot, and same time summon one doctor to treat him there and then later shift to Hospital.because it is very important to give him heart massage so that he starts breathing suppose he is not breathing.Try to vomit water in his lungs.

May be the contractor who built this concrete slab is of same quality who are doing road construction work year after year. Durability one year, after 12 months we have to use it at our own risk...
