'Dead' baby comes alive at funeral in UP

Lucknow, Sep 26 (DHNS):In an incident reflecting neglect and apathy of the government hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, a new born, who was declared dead almost immediately after being born, came alive at the cremation ground minutes before being buried.

The infant, who was rushed to the hospital, died around five hours later. According to the sources, Vandana Pathak, a resident of Amethi, had given birth to a female child at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital here on Thursday.

Vandana alleged that no lady doctor was present during her delivery. “I was taken to the labour room by an Aya (female paramedic),” she said.

Vandana’s husband Shiv Bhushan Pathak, said the Aya, informed him a little later that the new born had died.

“I took the infant to the cremation ground to bury her there...just when I was pouring the Gangajal (waters from the Ganges) into her mouth, I realised that she was breathing,” Pathak said.

The attendants rushed the infant to the hospital again. The doctors also arrived there immediately after being apprised about the matter.

They, too, found that the infant was alive. The baby was admitted to the NICU but she died around five hours later.

Angry attendants created a ruckus at the hospital demanding action against the guilty doctors. “My baby might have been alive had the doctors attended to her when she was borN,” Pathak said.

The chief medical superintendent of the hospital Dr. R.C.Agarwal said that a notice had been served on the doctors, who were on emergency duty at the hospital.

“The matter will be thoroughly investigated and action will be taken against the doctors if they are found guilty,” he added.

Past incidents

Earlier also, there have been numerous incidents of neglect by the doctors at government hospitals in Uttar Pradesh.

On many occasions ward boys and sweepers were found to be treating and even performing surgeries on the patients.
