Kasargod, Oct 3: The Kasargod police on Saturday October 3 recovered a huge haul of gold from a well located in a remote area in the outskirts of Kasargod. The gold was found in a sack.

It is said that the gold was part of the booty stolen from Vijaya Bank, Chervatthur in the last week of September. The thieves had drilled a hole into the bank's strong room and decamped with 19.75 kg of gold and Rs 2.95 lac in cash.

On Friday October 2, the police took four persons into custody, including Abdul Lathif who is said to be the mastermind. Based on the information provided by them during interrogation, the investigation team recovered the gold.

It is suspected that the thieves might have thrown the sack containing the gold into the unused well while to trying to escape. The exact quantity of the recovered gold is not yet known.

It is learnt that the gang had been functioning out of Madikeri. Among the accused, Abdul Lathif is said to be involved in the jewellery store theft which took place in Kanhangad in 2010.
