Udupi, Oct 7: Cracking down on buses using high decibel vacuum horns, the Udupi traffic police on Wednesday October 7 intercepted over 40 service as well as city buses at Court Road here and fined them.

In response to public complaint and on the directions of a judge of the Udupi court, SP Annamalai has initiated stern action against the use of vacuum horns instead of battery horns.

The traffic police conducted the operation at two spots - near Jodukatte and at Court Road. The cops stopped the buses which were using high decibel horns and removed them.

The buses found guilty of violation were fined Rs 100 each, and if they repeat the offense, they would be fined Rs 200 the next time.

The locals have complained that the stretch from Jodukatte to service bus stand is a busy area, and constant honking of high decibel horns creates much noise pollution and disturbance. The court, taluk office, a hospital and a school are located in the vicinity and honking is a major source of disturbance, they said. However, despite several such crackdowns, bus drivers continue to ignore rules and time and again use such horns.

The operation was held in the presence of Udupi traffic SI Rajgopal and ASI Prakash and two other personnel.

KSRTC Volvo bus fare from Mangalore to Udipi is Rs. 100 and fine for this only Rs 100. This is not even Peanut but its skin for always jam-packed buses owners. Also why Police remove these horns, make driver and conductor to bend down and remove horns. And do this check 4 to 5 times in a month

Great JOB. DK Police should follow now. My question to Police Dept. ACP and DCP including SP and Commissioner:-
When a Person uses illegal gun and shoots, Police arrest the shooter and the supplier of Gun to the shooter. Same way when a thief requests a Innocent Person to hold the ladder to climb the window to rob. Without knowing the innocent person holds the ladder thinking that robber is a Painter. But when arresting the robber,Police arrest the innocent person too as accessory to Robbery.
Same way if high Db Air horns are illegal to use, then it should be illegal to install them by Garage Mechanics. So arrest them for illegal act and fine heavy,so they will not repeat this act.

I request Mr.Joe Gonsalves to take this matter seriously as Chief Traffic Warden. These loud horns will damage the ear drums of your subordinates when they do their duty as Traffic Wardens.

Well done Udupi police. These unscientific horns are real nightmare to two wheelers. Often rider gets gullible by these horns and lands in gutters in the course of giving way to these buses. Hope Mangalore police too will get inspiration from Udupi police.

My request to the Udupi& DK police is to crack down the Motorcycles with modified silencers causing heavy noise on roads. These bikes cause lot of panic especially to the children, women and old aged. Noise standards of automobiles have been notified in Part1 E, schedule-VI of environment(Protection) rules 1986, as amended on 19th may 1993. The permissible limit for motor cycles/scooters is 80 Decebel(dB)but these bikes with modified exhausts crossing the permissible limit. The permissible noise limit in silent zones, Residential areas and commercial areas, 50 to 65 dB in day time and 40 to 55 dB in night time.
Recently, few months back, Bengaluru Police cracked down and seized more than 200 bikes for high noise. They were surprised to see that some of these bikes noise levels crossing above 120dB. They also warned the shoppers who sell such muffler, action will be initiated against them. Udupi & DK police doing their duty honestly and I hope they also initiate actions immediately on these bikes violating the noise limit.

It is but common sense that the horns should be restricted to the best possible extent. In foreign countries no horns are ever used by the drivers.

Mr. Annamalai has taken the initiative and I am sure the rest of the districts will follow his example.

Why traffic department reintroduce rubber bulb horns instead of air and electric horns. These horns are very sweet to hear and drivers also get little hand exercise while blowing.

    Vinay,
In Mangalore's summer heat the rubber bulbs get harder and start cracking, ultimately no air is blown. Moreover when it is hard and rough, its no pleasure for the hand too!

Very good job, keep it up. These horns are annoying & they scare two wheeler riders, four wheelers & pedestrians which leads to many accidents. Fine them heavily. This happens when RTO issues Permits & licenses to the uneducated / uncivilised owners & the drivers.

At least a sincere effort has been made by Udupi Police. Feel great about it. All around, the cops must punish these speeding and honking illiterate drivers. People are suddenly thrown off the footpaths with the blasting sounds. Sickly people within houses can not even sleep when they honk unendingly. Please put a few volunteers between Nantoor junction and Kulshekar and record the number of violations these drivers can cause. Congrats to Udupi Police. Mangalore City Police can do the same

High decibel horns should be totally abolished. Offenders should be punished with high penalty and cancellation of permit for a month. For repeated offenders bus permit should be canclled for good. Horn should not be used in Hospital, school and other busy public places. A law and order should be implemented with a dedicated hotline number provided to citizens were they can lodge complaints against reckless drivers. It's high time to implement these regulations before we go for a smart city programme.

Fine of Rs.100 or Rs.200 is negligible. Fine should be at least of Rs.1000/- Police should set up a phone number dedicated to "SHRILL HORN" where public can inform the police about Shrill horn users. This way we can get rid of shrill horns.
