Mangaluru: Woman dies after delivery, hospital accused of negligence

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Oct 8: Days after a young woman who was admitted to Lady Goschen hospital for delivery died after developing complications, it has been alleged that the hospital's negligence had caused her death.

Madhavi, wife of Thimmappa Gowda and a resident of Tenkamijar, had got admitted to Lady Goschen hospital on September 27. The same day, she delivered her first child, a healthy boy.

However, the next day she suddenly developed complications and was operated upon. She was shifted to Wenlock and then to a private hospital, where she breathed her last.

Addressing a press meet in Moodbidri on Wednesday October 7, ZP member Janardhan Gowda alleged that the hospital's negligence had cause Madhavi's death. He claimed that after the delivery, her family members were not allowed to see either Madhavi or the baby even till evening.

On September 28, Madhavi suffered heavy bleeding and was operated upon. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to Wenlock hospital, but due to unavailibility of specialized doctors, she was again shifted to a private hospital. She failed to respond to treatment and passed away on October 5, said Janardhan Gowda.

He pointed out that despite having a tie-up with a private hospital, Madhavi was taken to another private hospital and the bill came up to Rs 2.4 lac. Even though the family belongs to BPL category, they did not receive any government benefits, Gowda claimed, adding that after Madhavi's family members and he himself requested the hospital to reduce the bill, a discount of Rs 25,000 was given.

"Madhavi had a normal delivery and then developed heavy bleeding. The doctors at Lady Goschen hospital operated upon her, but there was much delay in informing the same to her family members even though they were in the hospital itself. Only PG doctors and nurses were present during the delivery and there was no specialized doctor," he alleged.

He also said that a complaint in this regard has been given to the deputy commissioner, who has ordered an enquiry into the case. "Doctors and hospital staff who are found guilty of negligence should be punished and a suitable compensation should be awarded to the bereaved family," Janardhan Gowda demanded.

Taluk panchayat member Jayalaxmi Shettigar and others were present at the press meet.

Govt. should themselves build few MBBS colleges where students from poor and middle class group students should be selected and admitted for the MBBS colleges. The entire expenses should be borne by government with a rule that these students should work for the government hospitals for certain years. Difficult but possible. Doctors from poor family might understand the problems of poor patients.

After completion of MBBS after internship these fresh doctors will be appointed as Medical Officers by Government because they have to do compulsory RURAL postings. What will happen to the patients in rural areas since Internship will not give adequate experience. All fresh doctors need at least one year training under senior doctors.

Hospitals which have a college or students MBBS or PG the issue is very bad. Why do the students diagnose the sick who visit the hospitals? The students make a mess because the doctors with experience making money at their private clinics. The hospitals cannot question them since the students pay a huge capitation fee for their studies.

Let there be a proper inquiry and if some one is negligent in their duties punish them. Thats whats needed. If innocent no one must be punished also.

Of course there is no question of punishing the innocent. The question is will those found guilty will ever be punished or penalised?

The no. of deaths during delivery seem to occurring at an alarming rate in DK, every month we get to hear such cases from different hospitals, which is too high for a small city like Mangluru!! Can this be considered a coincidence or incompetence of docs to handle complications during pregnancy!!

There is no doubt, with commercialization of med education and sprouting of colleges unbatedly, the quality of docs passing out has gone down miserably!!

Lady Goschen hospital has 25 - 30 deliveries a day from various surrounding areas, sometimes right up to Sirsi.there are no Government doctors, just 2 gynecologists. KMC manages all cases.there is no equipment, not enough beds or delivery tables & of course work force.no cases can be refused as they will go & make another press conference if refused admission.Officials visit LGH regularly..but it remains status quo.of course, patients get the best possible care with all limited resources, yet some patients die as they have other problems too. This patient had liver problem which was known only after delivery.she delivered within 15 minutes of coming to hospital,so the problems came to be known only later.in spite of the best treatment & care in a good set up for 7days she died.where is the negligence?

@Felcy Mangalore,A Person who is outside and has over that Zero knowledge about medicine ,can easily give complaints ,can tell negligence from Hospital staff. But one who knows how a delivery and complications of it ,can tell or sometimes write a book on the spot.Even a normal delivery can turnout into a big complicated and lead to death within minutes, when her previous history not known.specially liver Problems lead to bleedings even Special doctors cant control .I experienced in maternity women having Hepatitis deliver normal, then begins the Drama bleeding cant stop.only blood transfusions help Little but not much women slip off from our Hand .even cant operate.they bleed simply.so People should stop blaming Hospital staff without knowing Facts.Of course mistakes do happen, everywhere .but should not Combine everything in one.As one doctor commented,no doctors in L.G.hospital,why do they run Hospital Iask.do the Minister know it?In Hospital when a not experienced doctor is there should be a one in Charge should be there.when such mega mistakes are Happening, then govt.should undertake something or Close it.It is sad what happened .but God knows who has made mistake and he will certainly punish them in time.Rip.to the Soul of htis woman.

First of all, no negligence has been proved. Sometimes patients die inspite of best efforts by the doctor.
PGs are adequately trained to conduct deliveries. There is absolutely no need of a specialist except in rare cases. Conducting a delivering is taught during MBBS degree itself.
If people continue to blame doctors for everything I don't see a future where doctors can practice safely and with the patient's best interests in mind without worrying too much about being sued or even worse, thrashed by the patient party.

Getting medical practical experience by using poor is inhuman act.

I can list out many hospitals in managlore. They are not doing charity work with low bill, they only attract poor with this low bill,

    RIP SIS.

Everybody living in and around Mangalore very well knows the functioning of Lady Goshen and Wenlock hospitals! These people could have straight away gone to a private hospital for delivery and saved a life and more than half of the expenditure incurred!
