Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV/SP)
Mangaluru, Oct 10: Days after the matter came to light, a first information report (FIR) was registered in Pandeshwar police station here on Friday October 9 against social networking website Twitter under both IT Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for promoting child porn and animal sex.
Various organizations led by Santhosh Kumar, who first brought the issue to the notice of social welfare organizations, complained to Pandeshwar police station about posting of sexually explicit blue films, videos, animal sex video, porn content with the participation of minors etc in Twitter. The complainants have urged the police to see that social networking websites with the above content as well as sites containing sex videos are frozen, and stern legal action is initiated against them.
The delegation which visited the police station comprised Prof Hilda Rayappan, director of Prajna Counselling Centre, Renni D'Souza of Padi, coordinating officer of Mangaluru Childline-1098, Yogeesh Malligemadu, Nagaraj Panakaje, Asuntha D'Souza, psychiatrists and representatives of various organizations including social activists as its members. In a press note, Padi Childline said that this could be the first time in the state that an FIR has been registered in a case like this.
Santhosh Kumar in his complaint noted that viewing of such content disturbs the minds of children, makes them to choose wrong paths in life, and incites them to get involved with serious offences like rape.
Speaking to daijiworld, which had reported the issue earlier, Santhosh Kumar said that the matter would not end with just filiing a complaint. "We will hold a public awareness campaign next week on the issue to alert the parents about the need to protect children from such content on the internet."
Renni D'Souza said, "Next week we will hold a consultation meeting with experts, psychologists and the police on how to tackle the issue. Mangaluru police is not equipped to handle such cybercrime cases. The police in Mangaluru do not have expertise in cybercrime. They should be trained in dealing with pornography related issues and have access to trace the culprits. Such facility is available in Bengaluru, but the system in Mangaluru too should be upgaded to deal with such cases."
