Mangaluru, Oct 13: Members of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) are holding a protest on Tuesday October 13 by closing down their offices and suspending all construction activities. This is being organized as a mark of respect for Suraj Parmar from Thane, Maharashtra who sacrificed his life in his fight against corruption and inefficient system, and also in protest against the deficiencies in the current administrative system.
Suraj Parmar, who belonged to the one of the prestigious construction firms from Maharashtra, Cosmos Group, committed suicide on October 7. In a letter left behind, he had explained about various problems being faced by construction firms.
Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday October 13, CREDAI's city unit president, D B Mehta, said that the real estate business is currently suffering from many deficiencies in the system, namely, the 'endemic delays in getting approavals, plans getting rejected with retrospective effect, political interference, deliberate delays in implementing government policy, subjecting on-going projects to whimsical regulations, retrospective application of new rules and regulations, and unaffordable demands for bribes from officials and victimization for defying the bribe payment'.
"To build afforadable houses, we need to have affordable borrowing and affordable approval process system in time and single window system. In Karnataka, nearly 20 permits are required before starting a project. Sometimes we have to wait for three years to get clearances, and go to Bengaluru to seek some of the permits. The government should bring in reforms in the system and deal with officers who demand bribes.
"We face exorbitant costs today due to cost of land, construction and other costs. Reforms should be brought in to speed up the process and the system should be digitalized," he said.
"CREDAI is a responsible body and in this hour of grief, as a mark of respect and solidarity to our fellow developer the late Suraj Parmar, our nationwide member developers will protest with closure of officers, site offices, registration and construction work on Tuesday. A memorandums would be submitted to MLA J R Lobo, district deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, city corporation commissioner Dr H N Gopalakrishna, city mayor Jacinta Vijay Alfred, and Mangalore Urban Development Authority commissioner Muhammed Nazeer," he said.
"CREDAI-Mangaluru and its members make fervent appeal to the district administration to develop an atmosphere of trust and workig together in a spirit of partnership for the development of the city to ensure that there is no such unfortunate event in Mangaluru. This is possible only if the 'ease of doing business' becomes a reality," Mehta said.
