Mangaluru: Ganja peddling - accused convicted, sentenced

Mangaluru, Oct 16: Through a judgment delivered on Wednesday October 14, the district and sessions court here sentenced a person who was found to be carrying ganja at Ganesh Katte near Tannir Bavi here. The incident had occurred four years ago.

The convict, Alwyn Pinto alias Anil Bangera (36), who was working as a bus time keeper, had been arrested by the policemen of Coastal Security Force red-handed on December 19, 2011. When the then inspector of the force, Mukund Nayak, was patrolling the area along with some of his staff, he found Alwyn trying to hide from the police and flee from the spot. Growing suspicious, he chased Alwyn and took him into custody. Alwyn was found to be possessing 1,100 grams of ganja and Rs 600 in cash, both of which were confiscated.

Nayak thereafter conducted investigation and filed charge sheet in the court. Chief district and sessions judge, Uma M G, who conducted the trial, after listening to the arguments, counter arguments and cross examinations, and perusing evidences, concluded on October 13 that Alwyn was guilty of the charges levelled against him.

The quantum of sentence was pronounced on October 14; Pinto has been ordered to undergo two years of rigorous punishment (RI) and pay fine of Rs 10,000. In case of failure to pay fine, he will have to undergo additional six months of simple imprisonment, the judge said.

The prosecution was represented in the case by public prosecutor, Pushparaj Adyantaya.
