Dengue fever cases over 26,600 in Taiwan

Taipei, Oct 23 (IANS): Taiwan has reported another 307 cases of dengue fever, bringing the total number of infections since the outbreak in May to 26,660, the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) said on Friday.

The cities of Kaohsiung and Tainan, where the dengue fever outbreak is concentrated, reported 185 and 119 new daily cases, Taiwan News reported.

Dengue fever has claimed a total of 122 lives so far this year in Taiwan, the CDC said, adding that 24,521 patients have recovered from the disease.

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes.

The symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash. In a small proportion of cases, the disease can develop into hemorrhagic dengue fever, which can be fatal.
