Udupi, Oct 27: Karnataka Lalithakala Academy, Bengaluru and Manipal Center for philosophy and humanities jointly organized a four days national artists’ campaign at Manipal here on Sunday October 25.

Peter Lewis, former chairman of KLA, initiated the camp by drawing a sketch on the board.

Peter said, "Udupi lacks good art schools. G S Naik fought for it, but it remained as a proposal only. He believed that artists belong to Goddess Saraswati's family. Tonal value and traditional colour are important for creating an artistic atmosphere.

He urged the government to promote art along with artists. The present scenario shows that artists give more importance and respect for money than art.

In foreign countries people hang original paintings at their homes. The advancement of people and art museums are witness to their respect towards artists as well as art.

Indians have less commitment over preserving art work. There is need to create awareness about the significance of art among people.

He wished to develop more and more art institutes in Udupi.

Dr M S Murthy, president KLA, Bengaluru in his address said, "Paintings are not given required importance in India hence, we the people need to work towards it.

He informed the gathering that people who are deprived the opportunity of advancing their interests, know the limitations in that field.

The academy has recognized 560 official artists across the nation and has also planned to make ID cards. He added that skill is not important to become an artist. He must know its richness and value. Artists are developed as performers today and as a result they go after money.

He expressed his disappointment towards people’s lack of unity in tackling their problems. Artists have become food for controversial issues.

He added that art should develop and go beyond the limitations of caste and religion in society.

Murthy disclosed that the academy completes 50 years this year. There are four universities offering their support towards the academy.

The various art promotional programmes to be introduced in the state in days to come are Padasale, Varna, Thingala Chitra and so on.

More than 15 national level artists participated in the campaign.

Purushottam Adve, convenor of campaign, K Sdheendra, Meera Byndoor and others were present.
