  • SC's refusal to lift the stay order deemed a big blow to Arjun Singh

Mangalore, Aug 8: The youth of Mangalore, especially the young medicos of the city's five medical colleges, not very long ago, had joined their fellow medicos across the nation in coming on the roads and protesting against the decision of the UPA government to make extra 27 percent reservations for OBCs. Their only outcry was to make reservations on the basis of merit, and not social caste.

In what can be considered a big blow to the UPA government and especially to HRD Minister Arjun Singh, The Supreme court on Wednesday blocked the Reservations for this academic year.

The students carried placards, shouted slogans against reservations and also burnt effigies of UPA leaders.

The debate has been the burning issue throughout the country in all strata for more than a year now. Young Mangalorean medicos who protested against the reservations were very happy and elated with the SC's verdict on the reservation row.

What fraction of these students have joined the course by merrit. If 50% guy can become Doctor because his dad is rich, why a 50% fellow can't be a Doctor for his caste. This is double standard. These guys are motivated by caste or political motives.

In Delhi, last year when a similar agitation was done in Delhi, later on it was known to be a sponsored agitation. They were getting 60,000 Rs per day for the agitation. There must be some sponsorship for this agitation also. These rich Doctors are more irresponsible and dangerous than "lower caste" Doctors.

I confess I am not a wizard to see the photos and judge whether those holding the placards have or do not have social concern. Both "reservation by donation" and "reservation by caste/ religion" are twin headed evils and one can not choose one over the other.

Whatever may be the justification for any reservation if merit does not get recognised in a society it is doomed to be mediocre only. But when there is lot of incentive to remain backward who would like to come forward. Result?- Brain Drain. Advantage? - Other countries.

Well said Mr Deep.Doctors who get seats with huge amounts of money are more dangerous than the one's who come through reservation. Though I don't support reservation based seats ,I very much doubt the social concerns of the Guys & girls who are displaying placards & shouting slogans out there.

If the congress or UPA needs public support in the next elections then they should come out of this OBC quota system. This system only makes un-professionals professionals. If they really wants to support the so called SC/ST or poor then they should help them finacially to those who qualifies rather giving them preference.

Nobody seems to care for the "reservation by donation" where only rich and influential students get admissions. This should also be brought under scrutiny. This is also as bad an evil as caste based reservation.
