Obama wishes Modi happy diwali, reaffirms India-US ties

By Arun Kumar

Washington, Nov 11 (IANS): Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi to wish him a happy diwali, US President Barack Obama has reaffirmed the importance of the US-India partnership in addressing both regional and global issues.

A White House readout of the call on Tuesday said Obama spoke to Modi by phone "to review joint efforts on key areas of bilateral cooperation and to preview global issues ahead of the upcoming G-20 summit, East Asia Summit, and Paris Climate Conference."

"Noting that the conversation represented the first use of the new secure line between the two leaders, President Obama wished the Prime Minister a happy Diwali and reaffirmed the importance of the US-India partnership in addressing both regional and global issues."

"Both leaders shared their perspectives on developments in South Asia and discussed the progress they have made on shared economic and security priorities, including implementation of the Joint Strategic Vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region and addressing the global challenge of climate change," it added.

Earlier, in New Delhi, Modi tweeted after the call: "A short while ago @POTUS (President of the United States) called. We exchanged Diwali greetings. This was our first conversation through the newly-established hotline."

"President Obama & I look forward to meeting in Turkey during the G20 Summit," to be held on Nov 15-16, he said.

Modi said President Obama and he "discussed a wide range of other issues as well. It was good knowing how @WhiteHouse is marking Diwali."

The G20 summit is being held after the adoption of Sustainable Development Goals agenda at the UN and ahead of the climate change summit in Paris on Nov 30-Dec 1.

Needless news being published. Just PR propaganda. Diverting attention from the tight Bihar slap.
Overseas trips are heavily over-hyped. UK tour perfectly timed. Self advertisement only, rest is all hollow.

Early in the morning an old song came to my mind. I dedicate this song for Modi.
    "Ekh wo bi diwali thi
    Ekh yeh be diwali hey
    Uduja huwa gulshan hey
    Rota hua mali hey.
I wish he sing this son to Obama, because he declared a holiday for diwali, whereas Modi changed the Christmas day to 'Good governess day'. Keep it up Modi, West Bengal & Kerala will give you better Dipawali.

Both leaders of neighbouring countries follow a give & take policy.

No wish for Ramadan .., same is true by them(PAK) - no wish for Diwali (festival of light & happiness).

But now the real test & onus is on PM Namo, - whether our PM extend Christmas wishes (message of universal love & peace) to OBAMA vis-a-vis to christians living in Hindustan.

Let us wait & watch.., can our pm match to the statesmen ship of POTUS.

In my opinion - any wish to POTUS without fellow peace loving hindustani christians is a big FEKU.

Thankyou Mr Obama for Greeting Indians. Hope Modi also learns from you to to wish Catholics and Muslims on their festivals. Modi may not be celebrating after the shameful defeat in Bihar Elections. BJP used even Diwali festival to politicise Bihar Elections. Diwali has been celebrated by my Hindu brothers and sisters since time immemorial. BJP wanted to make Diwali Occasion a copyright of BJP. How sad BJP can go to such a shameful extent to garner few votes.Today our entire country is celebrating after the shameful defeat of bjp in Bihar. Only two leaders ( Modi and Shah ) are celebrating in Pakistan.

Wish Modi too showed similar statesmanship in India during Christmas and Good Friday last year instead of declaring as Good Governance Day and cancelling the holiday in some BJP ruled states. When will our politicians learn to rise above petty communal politics and become true statesmen.
