Mangalore, Aug 19: Those people who have been supporting Kannada script for Konkani received a huge moral support from M P Prakash, state home minister on Sunday Aug 19.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of ‘Konkani Manyatha Divas,’ organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, at Ganapathy High School grounds, he said that, 50% of Konkani speaking people of the country are living across Karnataka. Hence, it serves better for all to accept Kannada script for Konkani universally, which is taught in the schools of Karnataka now.

“The state government has introduced Konkani in the schools from this academic year, as an optional language. This is only because the Kannadigas always showed their love and concern towards other languages. If all Konkani people accept Kannada script in the school, the state government would render a lot more support to promote this language in schools,” he assured.

At the same time he asked Tuluvas to work on introducing a script for Tulu language.

Violence:

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have known for all-round developments in the state. But in recent days, minor clashes led into major violence here. This has jeopardized the reputation of this region.  Hence, the people of coastal region should also bear the responsibility to maintain peace in the district, M P Prakash urged.

“One can’t achieve anything by using arms. There are constitutional ways to find remedy for every problem. If the Naxals come forward to hold talks by surrendering their arms, the JD (S)-BJP led coalition government will definitely can have talks with them”, he said.

At the same time, he was felicitated by the Konkani Sahitya Academy, for aiding in introducing Konkani in the schools throughout Karnataka.

Gabriel Vaz, member of the Academy, H S Shivarudrappa, registrar of the Academy, Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, vicar general of Mangalore diocese and MLA Yogish Bhat were present on the dais.

Academy president Eric Ozario welcomed the gathering and delivered the key note address. Roy Castelino proposed vote of thanks. Charan Mallya and Irene Rebello compered the programme.

If Karnataka people learn Devnagri Konkani. they will know Devnagri. They will not forget Kannada script, because they learn Kannada in Kannada script. Think on it.

It is true that 50% of Konkani speaking people are from Karnataka. Also for the people of Karnataka Kannada script is easier than any other script. You can find Konkani periodicals of only Kannada script in the news stands of Karnataka. I reside in Mumbai. Even in Mumbai the periodicals found in news stands are only of Kannada script.

There are FIVE weeklies, one fortnightly, more than 30 monthlies and other periodicals and more than 75 regional periodicals are published in Kannada script in Karnataka. So there is no conflict in selecting script for the people of Karnataka. Besides this several books are also published every year from Karnataka.

People of Coastal Karnataka are tolerant of other languages. They always have much respect for the languages of their neigbhours. Hence while growing most of those people learn at least FIVE languages. Tulu language was so far remained as a spoken language. But because of the efforts of Tulu Sahitya Akademy literature is slowly blossoming in the Kannada script in Tulu language too.

The same script should be used if it is brought in schools. Konkani is shining after the Konkani fighter ERIC OZARIO took charge of Konkani Sahitya Akademy. His greatest effort is bringing Konkani in Schools of Karnataka in Kannada script.

Ongoing vovyo vers Karyagar, Man Mhonis Sanman, publishing Konkani Dictionary, Shatamanantlyo Kavita, Shatamantatlyo Kannyo are his other acheivements.

From where did M.P.Prakash got the figure that more than 50 percent of the Konkani speaking people live in Karnataka? Even if it is near to that figure, why he should advocate Kannada script for Konkani and a new script to be cooked for Tulu? What is his logic? Are we having a virtual fool as a Home Minister?
