Mangaluru, Dec 7: The eleven persons from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, all office-bearers of Kuwait-based Navachetana Welfare Association who were arrested last month in Kuwait for performing Satyanarayana puja on Monday December 7 said that the reason for their arrest was still unclear and alleged that someone had hatched a conspiracy against their association by giving false complaint to the Kuwait authorities.

Addressing a press meet in the city on Monday December 7, K V Purushotham Kukian, said on behalf of the Association that he along with 10 others were arrested 10 days after the puja was performed.

"On October 16, 2015, Navachetana Welfare Association, which is known for social service activities, had organized a puja in Kuwait, and this had been already informed to the Indian embassy there. The puja was performed in the basement of an apartment within the four walls and behind closed doors, as it performed every year. Nearly 150 people along with their families had participated in it. There is no provision to perform puja in public places in Kuwait, so it was observed in the basement within closed doors. The hall where it was performed has valid permission. We had been performing this puja since 2011.

"After 10 days of the puja, on October 26, Association member Yadav Poojary was called by his company HR and his passport was taken away and he was sent away with CID police. He was missing since then. On the same night, Association president Ashok Salian was also arrested. In the next five days nine people who had various responsibilities in the association were arrested," he said.

"After the Kuwait CID police took us, we were kept in an undisclosed location. We did not even know why we were arrested. When this was informed to the Indian embassy there was no positive response. Later a social activist from there contacted the Indian foreign ministry. As per the ministry's directions, the embassy officials took this case seriously.

"The officers who arrested us did not reveal why they had done so. The Kuwait State security department asked us for clarification on the puja, but even they did not explain what crime we had committed. We suspect that there was a conspiracy and someone gave false complaint to the officials to try and frame the association. This also put committee members in a fix unnecessarily," he said.

"The Institution which examined the details of those arrested failed to file a case because both the Association as well as the office-bearers have a clean record. They then deported us. On November 13, nine of us came to India while the remaining two came on November 17," he added.

Thanking MPs Nalin Kumar Kateel and Shobha Karandlaje for their efforts, he said, "Taking special interest in this case, Mangaluru MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje brought this issue to the notice of union minisers Sushma Swaraj and Ananth Kumar, who in turn took the initiative to bring us back to India.

"Later on November 29, Association former secretary Santosh Rai and president Ashok Salian also spoke to Sushma Swaraj and Ananth Kumar and gave detailed information on what had taken place. Sushwa Swaraj also assured that very soon she would make efforts to remove our names from the blacklist so that we can go back to Kuwait and work again. We thank the ministers, and also thank association members and activists as well as the media who helped us," Kukian said.

In an appeal to the central government through the media, he said, "We request the Indian government to look into the matter and make it possible for us to get our service benefits from the companies we were working for, and also to discharge our charges which have been falsely alleged by some persons without any reason, and we pray to grant us the same visas to join work in the same companies."

Yadav Sanil, Ashok Kodikal, Sathish K Belvai, Kumar Poojary Vamanjoor, Umesh Shetty Udupi, and Prashant Shetty Mijar, who were among those arrested in Kuwait, were present.

This is not the first time it is happening in Kuwait or any other gulf country. There are CID's looking for this kind of gatherings, and as soon as they see cars parked and people coming and going, they investigate. This is applicable for all expats, whether Hindu, Christian or Muslim. A few years ago 'Art of living' members were caught and deported from Kuwait in the same fashion. Sometimes neighbors do complain and police take immediate action. What I am trying to say here is conspiracy is not the only factor in this incident. In fact I am surprised how they were able to conduct the pooja for so many days without being investigated.

I suspect that there is no conspiracy but we should blame ourselves, bcoz people take pictures/videos and circulate among them viz Whatsup/FB, etc.
so the gathering was for a PUJA but when it circulates thru all social media, authorities got the infm and they are right. So, it was the mistake of the organiser, since they may be not taken the permission from MUNICIPALITY/ AUTHORITIES/ POLICE etc.
Even we had same situation but the municipality person requested us to pull out banners and posters and he allowed us to have the program but warned us not to make any noise/dirty the area etc.
    so, be cautious in future.

Just do the Pooja ceremony and left the rest on GOD to take care….. If you are wrong, you already got the punishment if not, person who instigated the theory will receive the deserved treatment none other than from GOD only!!!! One thing is very clear for all of us that….we can fight only in India for everything like religious tolerance, freedom of expression & speech, etc., etc. but sure not in any other Countries including any so called well developed countries too

As per the Indian consulate , it is clearly mentioned that they have not taken permission from the authorities to this pooja. Pooja was noisy and neighbours complained to the police . You guys are claiming that , hall is having permission for gathering. It was a violation of the law of land in Kuwait which pushed your group into these troubles. Now dont blame conspiracy theory here. Kindly be noted that irrespective of religion all GCC countries allow you to practice your religion. They would not have deported if you had taken the required permissions. Please note 800,000 Indians are living in Kuwait and practicing their own religion. If Kuwait was so strict and heartless how so many people can live there. Instead of dragging conspiracy theory please send an apology to the Ministry of Interior in Kuwait so that they will consider it.

    People,

Kuwait basically not a religiously tolerant society...so foreigner's should be very careful what they say and do in public...

In this case for sure Indian Embassy did not do their work sincerely...if you question them why? Their normal answer is we have so many Indian Citizens in Kuwait...

If this happened to any US citizen...some Kuwaiti diplomats would have been expelled from US for sure...

Anyway please be careful what you do and say in public when you live in Gulf countries...

Now also if Indian foreign ministry takes this with full force...Kuwait is likely to rescind their action...do Sushma has will to do this for Lalit Modi? Absolutely yes...for these poor guys?? I doubt...

We Expatriates have freedom to worship in most of the Gulf countries, It is not mean that we gather the crowd in our apartments and make sound. There are rules and regulations to follow and need to take permissions from the certain Authorities. In this case some one disturbed by this gathering and complaint gone to the Authority. So when we are living in any country, we should respect their laws and the sentiments of majority people.

My suggestion is follow and respect the law of the land.

A lot of "Desi folks" carry along their strange behaviours, food cooking practices or habits to foreign countries be it Gulf, Europe, North America or Australia and the same might be unacceptable to the locals there.

There is an old adage 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do'.

    Kuwait is an Islamic country.
You live there at their mercy. Do the pujaas in your house or apartment.

Citizens of those countries too will be apprehensive about expatriates. Today performing puja in a hall, tomorrow in a public place, then a demand for temple, then for rights etc... They have seen it happening in other softer countries.
So when we are living in any country, we should respect their laws and the sentiments of majority people.
