2-month-old son of Indian couple placed in foster care in US

New York, Jan 14 (PTI) : A two-month-old son of an Indian couple has been placed in foster care by US child welfare officials after he was admitted to a local hospital with head injuries in New Jersey.

The son of Ashish Pareek, an employee of Tata Consultancy Services and resident of Jersey City, had apparently slipped from his mother's hand and hit his head on a TV stand before falling hard on the floor, according to his family.

The baby was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with serious internal injuries to his head.

After initial treatment, the hospital transferred the baby, Ashvid, to another hospital where doctors reported the case to Department of Child Projection and Permanency (DCPP).

Local authorities had said that the child suffered from 'Shaken Baby Syndrome’ and had not agreed with the parents’ version that the little boy had hurt himself when he fell off the bed while playing.

The New Jersey DCPP had said that the parents neglected to take proper care of their child.

The child had received treatment at the Children's Specialised Hospital in New Jersey but the parents were not given permission to meet their son while in hospital.

After the recovery, the baby was handed over by child welfare officials to foster care last week.

The parents have said that it was an accident and deny claims by US authorities that they had tried to harm the child, according to Pareek's family.

Pareek's wife Vidisha delivered the baby in October. They have been living in the US since August.

The Indian Consulate here is in contact with authorities as well as the child’s parents but said legal procedures will have to be followed in the case since it has gone to court.

"The Consulate of India in New York is in touch with all concerned authorities including the parents and also the local authorities in this (case). However since the case has to be taken up in the court, the procedure has to take place which should not take long," the Press Wing of the Consulate told PTI when asked to comment on the case.

It expressed hope that the case will be resolved in a few days and said the Consulate is providing all logistic help.

In 2012, another Indian couple in New Jersey had been denied custody of their one-year old son after he had sustained serious head injuries at his home and had to undergo surgery.

Law & justice is just, fair and equal to every person in USA. Government power, family status, Financial power is not a consideration in the delivery of justice. Children & elderly persons have more protections under the Law to prevent abuse & mistreatment.

Shaken baby syndrome is distinct and distinguishable from other kinds of injury to the brain like from a fall. It happens when you intentionally shake the baby vigourously in order to damage its brain and paralyse it, leading to its ultimate death. A brain scan indicates this thing very clearly. There is no scope for doubt regarding the nature of the injury. It is likely that further investigations will land the parents in serious trouble.

US authorities are thick skinned, adamant and inhuman. They do not respect rest of the world people or their culture. In that case Pakistan , Bangladesh and srilanka people are much better and approachable.

Hard to believe and sad too.who has fault, whether parents,or really by mistake, but child and parents are both at the suffering end.I cant imagine a Baby of two months just slip and fall down all of a sudden but can when in bed while changing or giving bath with oil, when parents are first time having child.Poor child now away from parents care ,and parents are longing for their child.Hope they will get back (Less Chance). One should know in a land as in America ,or European countrys child care is being controlled, sometimes too much inefered. So be care ful .

If the State can prove that the baby was indeed shaken, criminal prosecution will follow. That can have serious consequences for the Indian couple.

Present situation is Both husband wife are employed. In these countries Wife will claim 6 month Maternity leave and husband may claim paternity leave. This leave is given to take care of baby....If these people failed to take care of baby than these governments will take action like this for Indian or American.

Very Sad News....But authorities just don't take the kid and go easily. They definitely know what is an injury due to accident or neglect. so they have taken away the kid. Its hard for some people to be honest and truthful. Accidents happen, I am sure many other parents have their kid in these type of situations without any issues. If there was a mistake or negligence, just accept it and fight it in courts rather than making it a national issue.

Dont write without knowing laws in US especially for children,
In US (unlike India and gulf countries) children are considered as future assets of their nation irrespective of nations or religions or races, Therefore, for any harm to children, have to be answered

As you have stated, in the U.S., they give high value to human life, whether they are poor or rich or any color. I have called 911 once when I saw an helpless person on the roadside the police and the ambulance came within minutes, took care of the problem and thanked me for calling.

The authorities are familiar with the child abuse and accidents, they have given the child to foster home due to their solid conviction that the child was abused. Let us wait and see the outcome for a better end.

Yes, children have more rights than parents in the West & US.
Kid has to sleep in different room from their parents, otherwise they will be kept in foster care.
If kids complain about their parents, parents will be behind bars too.
India is far better than these over pampered US kids!

Dev, you are overstating certain things. No parents will be penalized if the children are sleeping with them in their rooms.

If the children are complaining to the authorities of abuse, the social workers will appear and the parents are answerable.

I do agree with your statement. For many couples in their high status and high speed lifestyle, their God-given chidren are mere burdens so they are not properly loved and taken care. If the children are growing up without love and proper care, they will be having the same attidue towards their children later on life in most cases. But, some neglected children will be grown to be highly caring parents.

But when the neglected children are grown up without getting love and care, some parents are too self-centered to dictate their future career as a maney-making machine.

It is quite sad to watch, how many children are growing up without having 10 minutes interaction with their parents each day?
