Udupi, Sep 9: A workshop on “Protection of women from domestic violence” was inaugurated here on Sunday September 9, which was organised by the District Legal Services Authority.
Speaking on the occasion P Hemalatha, chief executive officer of zilla panchayat, stated that it is only when people truly understand the connotation and meaning of laws that its implementation can be most effectively carried out.
According to Hemalatha nearly 95 per cent of women in the country are undergoing mental harassment. To seek redressal of their grievances, when some of these women lodge a police complaint, they are subjected to further torture, she rued.
Moreover in her opinion, although the country had various laws to protect women’s rights, the ambivalent attitude of society had rendered them meaningless, she remarked.
Principal civil judge A.M. Ramachandraiah, welcomed the gathering. District and sessions judge K N Phaneedra presided over the inaugural function. Judge of Fast Track Court B Shivalingegowda and president of Udupi Bar Association Mattar Ratnakar Hegde were present on the occasion.
