Sex determination test be made compulsory to track mothers: Maneka Gandhi

Jaipur, Feb 2 (PTI) : Union minister Maneka Gandhi has suggested that sex determination test should be made compulsory to track women pregnant with a girl child as a measure to check female foeticide.

"In my personal view, the woman should be compulsorily told that whether it is a boy or girl child whom she is going to give birth.

"It should be registered to be able to check whether they have given the births or not," the minister for Women and Child Development said.

"I am just putting out this idea. It is being discussed though there is no conclusion yet," she said at the All India Regional Editors Conference here.

It is a different way to look at this problem (female foeticide), which could be solved with this idea, she said.

"We cannot keep catching people doing (illegal) ultrasound," she said, adding that arrest of such people was not a permanent solution.

SM Shanwaz..if you are in Dubai, can you check sex determination is legal or illegal there..i worked in two ME countries..there within 3 months Doctors will tell sex of the baby..but there is no question of abortion, its strictly illegal & its a crime..so nothing there to shock about MANEKA's statement..In many country its legal..let us have fare discussion rather just she is from BJP so lets ridicule her..its an idea under discussion for many year..It will deter families from abortion since Hospitals have database of pregnant..can prevent dangerous, unhygenic illegal abortions..

    Dear Ramesh S, mangalore,

As per the existing rule, doctors are not allowed to disclose the sex of a baby during pregnancy. then how did people get to know about the sex of a baby and do the abortions...? They cannot get to know without doctors help. So if they implement new rule also doctors will help the culprits.

She lives in a imaginary BJP world of marketing. What Govt would do if a mother gets to know of the child sex as girl and goes ahead with abortion for family pressure. Is the Govt going to put all the family in the jail?
Such illogical and unimplementable can emerge only from BJP these days.

It is seen very often that people are very much concerned about laws made to enforce women. Well it's good but nobody is concerned when these laws are misused by women to harress their husband and mint money. Indian society and laws need to be balanced for both genders failing which there will be no justice.

Humans shouldn't make any preference when a child getting birth into any family, let God's will be done in this matter.
This applies to Maneka Gandhi as well.
She is more concerned of women, no problem.
We should never be against women.
But she shouldn't be against men! She said once that men are source of fights!
Why she have to be so biased?
    Is anyone born without men?
God has given children to both men and women.

Female infanticide is evil , but progressive liberals very silent on male infanticides . They support abortions which is equally wrong as gender specific infanticide . With governments giving more schemes only for female girl child , and biased against male baby , this will create anarchy triggering Male infanticides .

    Mohan & Girish,

No ban on Chinese or Indonesian girls to come as DIL into Indian families but please do not treat them as Haryanvis & Punjabis do - who buy grown up girls from the market to bear children (especially sons) for them. Once the target is achieved, the women are driven out.

Yes - this is happening right inside India the girls are from nowhere else but from Gulbarga, in our own state.

So, do you need to venture international seeking girls or do you have a source within ?

Isn't anybody blaming 60 years of Congress rule now ? We have been liberated to understand present era and live accordingly, not to drive ourselves backwards and worry about social evils like dowry thus back off from bearing daughters.

Will someone explain how will a son get a spouse if nobody bears daughters ? We pride about Indira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawla, Idira Nooi or Kiran Bedi but the pride does not seem to be genuine !

The society should start a revolution now, that parents of daughters will wed their daughters only into those households who have a daughter. Let those who have just sons, take up orphan girls as daughters-in-law, there will be a balance in the society and pride in having any number of daughters !

Stop blaming governments and their policies for your mental state and your respect/disrespect towards womankind ! The weight-age at having a son, not a daughter, has lead to scarcity of brides to grown up boys which is leading to uncontrollable rapes in the country !
