Mangalore: Colourful Start to Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Bethany

Mangalore, Sep 18: The Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Bethany Educational Society (BES) was inaugurated by the superior general and president of the Society Sr Jyothi at St Sebastian’s Platinum Jubilee hall, here on Monday September. 17. She also released the diamond jubilee logo of the society on the occasion.
Principal of social works at Roshni Nilaya, Dr Jancinta D’Souza who was the chief guest, while addressing the gathering informed that the congregation has contributed greatly to the growth of a healthy, vibrant, just and humane society by empowering the marginalised and rural masses, especially women. The best ways to celebrate a diamond jubilee is to inspire young teachers to educate a child from the remote locations of India, who is less fortunate, she added.
Fr Raymond Mascarenhas started the Bethany Sisters Congregation in 1921, whose first members were the teachers of St Sebastian’s School at Bendoor in the city. It was registered as a society in 1948. Since then the Bethany educational society has provided selfless service to more than 14 states in India, Europe and now Africa too.
Speaking on the topic ‘Education for Excellence’, senior counselor of the Confederation of India Industry, Institute of Quality (CIIIQ), Dr Senthil Kumar, talked about the one and half year long relationship between the CIIIQ and the BES and appreciated the congregation for their commitment, competitiveness, co-existence and confidence.
The president of the All India Catholic Association of Schools Sr Ann Teresa also earlier spoke on the topic ‘Education for Peace’.
Secretary of BES Sr Joy, vice-president Sr Wilberta, deputy secretary Sr Jeevan, principal of District Institute of Education trainer Philomena Lobo, parish priest of Bendoor Fr Peter Noronha were present on this occasion.
A variety of entertainment programmes were presented by students of educational institutions under the Bethany Educational Society later.
