Udupi, Sep 20: A meeting of farmers was organized by the Udupi Zilla Krishak Sangha here on Wednesday September 19.
Speaking at the meeting, V Ponnuraj, deputy commissioner, urged for appropriate marketing of agricultural produce as being essential. He further stated that marketing can be done either through the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) or through the cooperatives.
According to Ponnuraj crops and vegetables that are grown using pure organic methods should be given certificates of merit. Being critical of farmers who used outdated methods of produce, he stated that farmers who produce crops utilizing under organic methods should not expect more price for their produce.
Further elaborating on the matter he said that loans were given to 8,705 farmers in the district at subsidized interest rates. Some farmers, who used the “System of rice Intensification” popularized by the department of agriculture have produced 35 quintals of paddy in one acre of land, he declared proudly.
