Beltangady, Feb 27: SDM College, Ujire has been known to create new ripples in cultural and other fields now and then. A unique short play of 17-second duration that was presented at the Indraprastha auditorium of the college on Friday February 26 is set to get recognition as the shortest ever play in the history of the world. This effort is scheduled to enter Golden Book of World Records.
The play, titled 'Mahakala' makes an effort to unfold the events right from the evolution of man to the end of the universe within 17 seconds. This play, touted as the shortest ever play presented in the world, has been created by the students of SDM college under the guidance of Hemavathi Heggade Dharmasthala.
Currently, the play 'Breath' (1969) by Samuel Beckett is considered the world's shortest play, with a duration of 24 seconds.
'Mahakala', based on a unique concept, has been directed by Shankar Neenasam. Golden Book of World Records has orally given nod for entering it as a new world record, and the processes as prescribed are being put through for this official recognition.
This ambitious project is backed by effort of an year, and a team of 27 students from degree and postgraduate courses of the college had been working since the last two months to make this happen.
Storyline: Man begins to make new inventions for his own progress and to lead a luxurious life. For asserting his supremacy and buoyed by arrogance about his own religion behind supreme, he overlooks others as well nature, and makes all out efforts to install own power and authority. His aspirations reach a point where the nature faces the prospects of getting destroyed. A thought process how to rescue the human race from this situation gave rise to the concept of this short play, it is gathered.
Annabelle Rebello of SNDT University Mumbai and English professor of the college, Sooryanarayana Bhat, helped with translation, while Sriram N and Ravichandra worked on art design. Head o the department of journalism, Bhaskar Hegde and Kannada lecturer, Vijayendra, also chipped in with valuable inputs.
Speaking at a programme of interaction with media held later, director, Shivashankar, provided the above details. He said that the play gives the message that nurturing of nature alone cam lead towards contented life for the human race.
Secretary of SDM Education Society, Dr B Yashovarma, Sonia Yashovarma, principal, Prof Mohan Narayan, and others were present.
