Bengaluru, Mar 3: After the enforcement of compulsory use of helmets by all two-wheeler riders and pillion riders across Karnataka, it is now the turn of ban on use of all non-essential plastics.

The State Cabinet, which met with chief minister Siddaramaiah in the chair, is understood to have decided to ban utilisation of non-essential plastics.

The ban on use of plastics, irrespective of its thickness, will come into force on the day of publication of a gazette notification.

The decision would lead to replacement of all non-essential plastics with eco-friendly materials across Karnataka.

The State Cabinet meeting took the decision to ban manufacture, distribution and use of plastic carry bags, irrespective of its thickness at its meeting in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The banned items are plastic carry bags, glasses, plates, cups, flags, buntings, flexes, banners, sheets used on dining tables in marriage halls.

The State Cabinet sought to ban goods manufactured from using thermocol and micro beads.

However, it has not banned plastic for water bottles, milk sachets, plastic bags used for growing nursery plants and for medical drips.

The State Government has maintained that the decision was taken following indiscriminate use of plastic bags, which was harmful to the environment.

The State Government had issued a draft notification in October last year inviting objections from plastic manufacturers for its decision to ban manufacture and use of all non-essential plastics products across the State.

The enforcement of ban on use of plastics is expected to give a boost to the manufacture and use of cotton and paper carry bags and thereby help the domestic cottage industry besides the members of a large number of non-governmental organisations and other rehabilitation centres, where the physically challenged persons are given work.

The plastic ban may be a welcome move !! but first provide cheaper alternatives and give the plastic bag manufactures a years time to switch over to other alternatives. And the biggest problem is what do the traders and consumer do with their existing stock? any answers ?

Congress is going to lose the Votes of all the Fish sellers in coastal area, as they will be badly handicapped without plastic bags as all fishes always leak smelly water.
Besides, Bengalis settled in Bengaluru (I.T field) are also going to shun Cong.

    Mr. Adappa,

Are you a cow supporter ? You have a best reason to rejoice. Do you know how many cows chew plastic bags that are thrown in garbage ?

What were the fish-mongers using before plastic bags came into use ? They were using leaves to make such a neat package which never leaked water out. Its been a decade since I am going out with a cotton bag neatly folded to smallest size, kept in my purse. Shop keepers shocked on me rejecting a plastic bag and offered to put the stuff in my own bag.

Its time for everybody to mend their way. Plastic had spoilt your habits, now correct yourself.

Good that government has taken this sensible decision and hope it will be implemented soon.

However the government shall arrange alternatives to the small and micro industries who are involved in plastic manufacturing. so that they can earn their livelihood by changing the business activities to some other Eco friendly products.

A mind blowing idea by State Cabinet headed by CM Siddaramaiah. This ban on plastics will help the environment and hope the people will strictly adhere to it. There is many disadvantages of using these plastic, thermocol and micro beads for non-essential items.

Without any doubt its very good decision to ban plastics but its not going to last long. I strongly feel soon plastic companies will approach the government with heavy suitcases and like always government will accept with open arms. Its just an eyewash to fool the public. And in case if the plastic ban is not revoked then the ban will be only on papers. It will never be enforced.

With the current Congress and BJP team/workers in Karnataka it is stupidity to even hope anything good from them.

    Jai Hind!
