Udupi, Mar 11: Thieves broke into Shree Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir at Thotadamane, Kodavoor and decamped with valuables and cash approximately worth Rs 8 lac. The theft came to light on Friday March 11.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the thieves gained entry into the temple by breaking the lock on the front door.

Interestingly, after breaking the lock, the thieves came out from another door, attached a new lock on the front door and went back in through the other door, in a bid to hide the break-in and also to thwart anyone who may come to the temple while they were committing the theft.

The thieves looted a silver footwear, silver umbrella, silver throne and ornaments. They also took away two large cash boxes to the back of the temple and stole the cash after breaking them open.

Altogether, cash worth over Rs 1 lac and silver items and ornaments worth Rs 7 lac have been stolen.

The temple has no CCTVs, which has made police job tougher.

Sniffer dogs which were pressed into action were able to detect the scent up till Moodabettu.

It is suspected that four or five persons might have been involved in the crime.

Incidentally, temple committee's Diwakar Shetty and others stay close by, but they said they did not hear anything suspicious.

About two years ago, theft had occured at the same temple, which later was said to be an insider's job.

Udupi circle inspector Srikanth Nayak, Malpe SI Ravikumar and other police personnel arrived at the spot and investigated.

Malpe police have registered a case and investigations are on.

I am staunch believer in Hinduism and my request to my Hindu community and temples is to stop be decking our temples with ornaments. We are doing huge disservice to the community. Why one after the other temple are robbed like like either by external or internal thieves the believers will losing faith in the deity. Instead use the money to build schools and hospitals and this money can be used to the betterment of community. Why does our God need so much of ornaments and that too kept in lockers like in Kollur? To get robbed ? We must have some kind of sense and use of money into betterment of society will improve the faith of community on our religion as well as dieties .

Dear Satish Shetty, I too in line with your opinion expressed. Our religious leaders and Swamiji's should guide our society in this direction. Today our temples are becoming true commercial organisations - in fact like a Joint stock companies.

Forgive me if I am wrong.

When money, power becomes the Centre of our place of worship irrespective or religion, and not GOD, Not spirituality then all this evil acts like robbery, deceit, inside hand for grabbing liquid assets etc etc will take place.

We are living in a world of religious mafia whose central theme is commerce, money, power not spirituality of Atma/ soul, mind, body and GOD.

Partly we ourselves are the cause, as we give undue importance for offerings.

A very beautiful temple. Now thieves in churches have no chances of getting silver, gold or big cash to steal. So when no cctv camera is installed makes them the Job more interesting and less Chance to get caught ,more richer.I am sure a Insider who knew whats going on and when, like in kundapur. Now temple committee should wake up and install camera in all temples small or big.why didn't they lock from inside front door besides out too.A Alarm System is too useful(when mescom doesn't fail)where more cash and Gold is placed.why dont they takeout Money from time to time and bring to safer in bank account?Or wit Intention kept ?But such silver figures may not bring much luck?who wants to go Risiko?Faithless and shameful People.

Police can not trace these theft cases easily cause thieves are from either north indian states or from other districts after loot ran away early morning to their origin destinations by konkan railway or by road transport.
