I have more Sikhs in Cabinet than Modi: Canadian PM

Washington, Mar 13 (PTI) : Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, known for his witty repartees, told an American audience here that he has more Sikhs in his Cabinet than his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

The quip came when Trudeau was taking 10 questions from students at the American University in northwest Washington during his state visit to the US.

During the half-an-hour session at the university on Friday, a student named Jahan from the Punjab province of Pakistan told Trudeau that it was really great to see so many Punjabis in his cabinet.

"I have more Sikhs in my cabinet than Modi does," Trudeau was quoted as saying by the Canadian daily 'The Star'.

44-year-old Trudeau, who assumed office in November last year, surprised one and all by including four Sikh-Canadians in his Cabinet.

The four Sikh Canadians inducted into Trudeau's Cabinet include Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, a combat veteran who did three tours in Afghanistan as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Apart from Sajjan, the other three Sikh ministers are -- Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi, Small Business Minister Bardish Chagger and Innovation Minister Navdeep Singh Bains, the Canadian daily The Globe and Mail had reported at the time.

There were also 17 Sikh MPs elected in the election in Canada in October last year -- 16 from the Liberal Party of Canada and one Conservative -- the highest number of Sikhs ever elected.

In contrast, there are two Sikh Cabinet ministers in the Modi government –- Maneka Gandhi, who is a Sikh by birth, and Harsimrat Kaur Badal who is the Food Processing Minister.

Trudeau, in the past, has been spotted doing bhangra moves and visiting Gurdwaras several times. He has also participated in Diwali celebrations apart from a 'Gurbani' recital. He has even helped out women in preparing meals in a langar.

Canada is very tolerant nation with majority catholic very generous towards refugees and charity. It has open non discriminated policy towards all without religion for opportunities in all sector. India has to follow such open non discrimination policy towards it's citizen who can contribute it's nation. India is running very divisive govt towards it's citizens mainly Christians who are so loyal to its nation do one of the best for India to wards education and Healthcare most of the priest and nuns dedicated their life sacrifices of own life towards it's nation. Doing such great noble work only reward from India to them is conversion and attack and abuse. Is that is what the reward for such noble work? Bjp goVT should look into this issue without negligence

Dear Friend Sri. Advani and the President of India etc were invited to speak in some religious functions of the Marthoma and Indian Orthodox Church in Kerala and their lectures were well planned to please the Christians with regular soothing message about their contribution for India in healthcare and education.

But when coming across the reality, they are treated as pure worthless and defenseless people.

When I watched the beating of the defenseless Christians in YouTube in many north Indian States, I was terrible shaken, they were beaten like street dogs.

While watching the outrageous attacks upon the Christians in Karnataka in 2008, it was quite shocking. Why did they specially target the minority Christians when BJP came into power?

The YouTube show is now being watched all over the world. Their cries have reached at the heavenly court thus wait for the due date of divine correction delivery.

Mr. Shetty: You have that eyes to see. Canada the 2nd largest country in the world, second to Russia in land, with 3 person/1 square kilometer population density (around 35 million people total population). But half of the population are foreign born. The capital of Canada, Ottawa is known as the city of Churches.

When I was passing through the Toronto airport a few years back, I was surprised to see the number of people from Sri. Lanka, the refugees working at the airport.

Now thousands of refugees from Syria are going to land in Canada.
Canada with her over 80% of the Christian population has opened the shores for the people of all nationalities and religions. The street goons of India who are enjoying the fun of persecuting the Christians don't know any of these things but the leaders must make an extra effort to teach the goons to watch their actions.

MoDi is will understand divid partition type of govt where minorities will be depressed and isolated so much that he will be happy to see them. Forget about giving opportunity in his cabinet but he will support the attack on minorities indirectly. I strongly believe he should leave that position. He only thinks about money and run his govt like saudi ways won't suitable in democracy and it's values.

S.K. I did travel through Punjab a few days and came to meet the Sikh community. They are friendlier, hospitable, caring and hard working people. The fertile Punjab State was a great attraction for me.

I have several Patel friends, in business they have learned the art of business from the Jewish people.

In India, we are blessed with different groups and religious people, when we make an earnest effort to learn the unique character and contributions of different religions and regions, that learning itself is a big education without attending college in social science. Take for example the Parsi community with the highest population in India and 2nd in the U.S. How much they have contributed for India in business? Great contribution.

It is very true indeed, that PM Justin Trudeau's Cabinet is very inclusive and his decision deserves a lot of praise and credit, especially because of inclusion of even small minorities. The Cabinet also has representation from all ten provinces and territories. It is a balancing act. Such a balancing act is impossible for PM Modi to perform unless he expands the cabinet to a hundred, to represent each of the 28 states, and to represent each of the dozens of dalits, christian, parsee, muslim, tribal and other communities. So, one is comparing apples to oranges. However, there could be token representation of the major communities, including Christians when giving representation to the states. Sikhs are a smaller community in India than Christians, but there are many Punjabis who also dominate the Central Government civil and military service. They are the real and effective power.
I do however strongly object to Mathew's remark that India is a autocratic theocratic political establishment. Even after more than fifty years in Canada, I still regard India as a secular democracy, in spite of the fact that Mathew and I belong to the same denomination. Jai Hind!

Dr. Prabu: You need not have to agree with my statement that at present India is an autocratic theocracy, time will reveal that.

Why did you elaborate the democratic qualities of Canada having minorities of the foreign blood like the Sikh people in the Cabinet? Thus you are contradicting yourself through your neutral comment, not to offend your party and its leadership.

75% of the Canadian export is to the U.S. U.S. has the largest trade partnership with Canada starting with oil, wood etc. Why did the Canadian PM mention the number of people of Indian origin in his cabinet and less Ministers at the present Cabinet of India?

The the street goons of India have a taken a sword against the minorities specifically targeting the Christians, Muslims and Sikhs.

I have not yet heard from any news media that Mr. Modi has responded to the letter sent by 24 Congressmen and 8 U.S. Senators expressing their concern over the increased minority persecution against the minorities. If India is a democracy and there is no religious persecution, why India didn't give visa to the Religious Freedom Foundation Representatives? Can you clarify that to justify your statement that now India is a democracy?

BJP is relatively new party but crime against minority is happening before independence when british divided us and new govt continued with that policy. Please give numbers and prove it

Over all, the attacks on the minorities, especially the poor defenselss Christians have been greatly increased 300% since BJP came into power. These details are well d in foreign lands already. It is not in Karnataka under the Congress rule, but in the north Indian States ruled by the BJP.

Sir, when Mr. Modi became the PM in 2014, I had great hopes and that he will eradicate corruption-red tape etc on the other hand will privatize many money losing Government owned business enterprises like the Air India and Indian Railway etc.

When he became the CM of Gujarat, instantly the minority persecution was increased especially towards the defenseless Christians. Then there was big earthquake. By the end of the three term tenure as the CM of Gujarat, in the anti-Christian persecution, Gujarat was at the bottom level but Karnataka took the lead as the top ranking level in the nation.

Thus, I had great hope that Mr. Modi will stand firm against the attacks towards the defenseless minorities, but he has not yet uttered a firm warning, which is causing some serious concern among the Christians all across India.

I have been living in the USA for pretty long time and most Sikh community people are well respected, dignified, helpful to others and have a class in their life style that keeps India's image high. They follow their religion but they are not religious fanatics. They are loyal to their adopted country. They are not blind bhakts of any politicians. Sikhs are the pride of India.
