Udupi: MIT student from Haryana suffers burn injuries while bathing, dies

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Mar 17: A student of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal died here on Thursday March 17, allegedly after a freak accident in his hostel bathroom on the night of Wednesday March 16.

The deceased has been identified as Neham Agarwal from Haryana, a second year student of MIT.

As per some of the students at the college, Neham suffered acute burn injuries after the geyser in his hostel bathroom exploded. He was admitted to Manipal hospital where he breathed his last on Thursday.

It was alleged that there were attempts to pass off Neham's death as 'suicide', and the students were bracing themselves to hold a protest.

However, on Thursday evening, the management issued a statement denying allegations that there was a cover-up. "...It was found by block care takers, block warden, security and students that Neham Agrawal, second year chemical engineering student, had sustained severe burn injuries in his bathroom in what appears to be an accident. The boy was immediately rushed to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and given treatment. Parents have been informed and they have already arrived to Manipal. The doctors attended to the injured boy and the condition was very critical," said Dr G K Prabhu, director of MIT in his statement to the students.

"Police and forensic team has already visited the site and investigating the situation... We assure you that all necessary steps will be taken to bring out the truth of the incident," he added.

He also appealed to the students not to spread or pay heed to rumours on social media about the cause of Neham's death, and not to turn it into an 'anti-college propaganda' by protesting.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dr G K Prabhu said that it was a case of unnatural death. "The police and investigating teams are collecting evidence to determine what exactly happened. We are fully cooperating with the police. We are waiting for the report.

"The incident happened at around 12.30 am, and soon after, the security and the students broke open the bathroom door and took Neham to hospital by our own ambulance. His parents have come," he added.

Police sources said that a kerosene bottle had been recovered, but refused to confirm the cause of death.

Manipal police are investigating.

Geyser exploding is highly unlikely. Unless it's gas fired. Manipal does not have gas fired geyser's!

It is because of "Make in India" geyser which can hold 5 litres to 15 litres of extremely hot water.
If explodes because of inferior materials used, or if there is no outlet release valve for pressure buildup, can cause this type of accident, splashing extreme hot water on the person nearby.

Very sad to hear this news. We lost a very young boy and the loss cannot be compensated in any manner.
College management should get this investigated. The parents of the boy and all of us should know what has happened. It is very important to bring those responsible for negligence to book while actions are taken to protect the security and health of 25 K children studying in Manipal.
Showing atmost importance to investigate, taking action to avoid any such instance in future and a sincere apology to the parents on institutes behalf is the key to give justice to departed soul.

Even though miles away, we all are with the parents of the boy who left us. May God give strength to the parents to withstand this irreversible loss for them.

Following certain standard process and procedures are the key for safety. If it does not happen in a hostel that is claimed as the best in the country where can we expect one. The institute should raise to the occasion and does not hide any facts in its effort to build back the shaken confidence.

Feels very sorry for the parents and the boy whom we lost at such an young age. It was indeed an avoidable loss.

Water heaters burst very rarely. Even if they burst then all the water falling on the person is rare. when cold water tap is there inside the bathroom / and the hot water temperature is not more than 70 degree C, then serious burn injuries are very rare. Anyway It is a freak accident.

I want to bring all yours kind attention to the following. Yes geyser can explode due to 1) overheating and thus over pressurization. 2) Boiler drum aging factor. Thickness of boiler wall reduces due corrosions. 3) Non functioning of safety valve installed in the hot water outlet line. Over heating due to thermostat which cutoff power supply to heating coil when set temperature is attained (Electric powered geysers)/ thermostatic valve which cutoff gas supply to burner when set temperature attained (Gas powered geysers) malfunction. The question is whether each and every room in the hostel provided with geysers? Normally in hostels centralized heating system is provided. These factors need to be verified

Very sad! It’s dangerous to place geysers or boilers inside bathrooms. Tragedy can be averted if these are fixed outside bathrooms. In apartments where bathrooms are small, boilers are fixed in kitchens. Also one should note to switch off boilers and geysers when water heats to the maximum level.

Kerosene can be used for many purposes, specially removing paint on soiled clothes or even very bad dirt marks.
And we do these types of works in bathrooms.
