Mangaluru, Mar 23: In yet another accident at Nanthoor, a woman was killed on the spot after a bus hit her on the morning of Wednesday March 23.

The deceased has been identified as Joyline Monis (24), a lecturer of commerce at St Agnes College, and daughter of John Monis, editor of a Konkani monthly magazine.

Police sources said that Joyline was riding pillion with her sister in an Activa when the accident took place. Her sister lost balance on the edge of the road and Joyline fell. A bus (route number 15) which was passing by then moved on her, killing her instantly.

Joyline's sister who was riding escaped unhurt.

As soon as the accident took place, a big crowd gathered at the spot and started protesting. They also stopped vehicles.

Police arrived at the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

Blame the road maker. Its time to improve India starting first with Road safety.

There is video showing the actual incident as it had happened (perhaps captured in the CC TV of the adjacent building). It clearly shows that the scooter in which Joylin was the pillion rider first skidded when it was at the edge of the concrete road and the pillion rider was thrown on the right side. The front of the bus had already passed the scooter before the scooter skidded. Joylin had fallen under the bus and immediately the rear wheel of the bus had gone over her head.
On seeing the video, it is clear that the bus driver was not at fault at all and there was no point in putting blame on him.
It shows that the actual fault was because of the scooter driver taking the scooter to the extreme left side and at the edge of the new concrete road that is being built. Hence there is no point in blaming the driver of this particular bus for the above accident.

Very Sad. Condolences to entire family.
The city buses drive very rashly and they do not care anyone. They do not realise that driving or walking on road are brothers and sisters. The Government or MP's and MLA's has to bring very strict rules on the drivers as well on heavy Vehicles.
Drivers has to be punished seriously and should not allow the vehicle to come on road for at least 30 Days.
Heavy Vehicle like City Buses has to be applied Speed Governors and should limit the Speed Kilometer to 30 Kilometers...
The public and the drivers who drive vehicles has to follow Traffic Rules regularly and should take care of ourselves and others too.

RIP Joyline Monis.I also would like to comment as a citizen that we all do a lot of mistakes. This road is one way as it is getting concretised. Two wheeler riders along with autos to save fuel ride this road. Traffic police are sleeping as they could have temporarily made arrangements for two wheeler riders a cut in middle of nanthoor highway to go towards SCS hospital and fro. The bus drivers are the worst among the lot . They do not care for anyone walking, riding a 2/3/4 small wheeler. what they care is competition in getting maximum for themselves and then owner of the buses.

However in this particular incident the two wheeler was diving towards NO ENTRY way though police men were stationed they must have ignored police instructions. Keeping in mind the road is closed for concretising they shouldn't have taken no entry road. May her soul RIP and pray for Monis family.

Most of the readers have bitter experiences with City buses. This situation will not change.

Yes as long as we allow the present system: bus lobby-MLA-MP nexus, the situation will remain same. Moreover as the vehicles are increasing there will be more accidents.

Forget about whose mistake- there is no margin for error in Mangalore roads. We are too busy to protest against unfinished pavements. Look at the heart of the city - Falnir road, Bijai road - edge of the concrete there is a deep trench.

As we use these public utility - we pay for ( taxes) , it is we who need to demand immediate action to rectify the roads. Let us have zero tolerance and let our zero tolerance reflect in an organized protest.

As long as we use these roads ( as they are) - lets face the facts - they are death traps. We will never know when we meet the similar fate. Yes- FEAR should be genuine.

We are being misled with grandiose ideas about smart city. Our officials instead of doing their jobs properly are dreaming of smart city. It is we who have to wake them up.

Fighting for public good is the best form of helping others. God will be more pleased with these selfless acts than offerings at our respective places of worship.

It is because we allow others to fight a lone battle and do not have time for collective effort- the lobbies target them. Mass protest to change the " system" alone can break the nexus ( money flow to the political parties).

If a particular company ( SM travels in this case) causes the accident - let that companies buses be barred for a month- difficult? or possible? Lets demand!!

Rest In Peace Dear Joyline and my heartfelt condolences to Mr. John Monis and family. May God grant her family, strength and courage to bear this big loss. MCC should be blamed for the death of innocent young talented girl’s death. If you are riding two wheelers, please keep a closer look on the edges of road. How many lives need to be lost for the authorities to take action? It’s very common city buses are driven so recklessly in Mangalore. No rules apply to them or they care or respect of other vehicles. Our society will never get justice unless they take some right and quick action. We civilians can get justice and this problem can be solved with the following only.
    1. MCC (Govt.) has to take serious action with improving standards of the all road junctions in Mangalore with constructing fly over bridges or underpasses in order to run smooth traffic flow.
    2. Introduce Govt. busses and permit them only can run inside Mangalore city and not any other busses.
    3. Two wheelers drivers always please be careful and if you are not confident don’t take pillion.
Saying this again I convey my deepest condolences to the deceased family.

City bus drivers and their supporting staff are very rude and they are running the traffic department, on 21-3-2016 in Bijai near KSRTC same bus No.15 hit my vehicle from behind and bus driver and conductor abused me and almost came to thrash me, being a senior citizen, without my fault, and they banged from back side, is this the way they have to behave. Why there is no law in this city, why cant Government cannot control of this menace, each and every road in entire city, buses are ruling the roads, kindly educate these beasts, how many lives are going just for their greedy needs.Such a intelligent and ambitious lady is no more may her soul rest in peace.

    RIP JOYLINE,
100% buses are a danger on mangalore roads! but most of mangalore drivers don't follow traffic rules too.
    Going in one way
    Overtaking from left
    No signal
    Mobile in hand
    No helmet
    3-4 on a two wheeler
    No signal
    Cutting circles
    High beam
    OVER-SPEEDING
    Riding 2,3,4 abreast.
    Etc etc
Someone rightly said if you can drive in mangalore you can drive anywhere on earth!
THIS TWO WHEELER DRIVEN BY HER SISTER WAS GOING DOWN ON A "NO ENTRY " ROAD FROM NANTOOR TO KADRI. AT A CERTAIN POINT THE ROAD NARROWS TO ONE TRACK. HER SISTER LOST BALANCE AND FELL OPPOSITE SHE FELL ON THE ROAD UNDER THE TYRES OF THE BUS. THIS IS ALWAYS A PROBLEM CAUSING TRAFFIC JAMS AND ACCIDENTS.
NO POLICE, MANS THIS NO ENTRY.
A POLICEMAN MUST BE POSTED HERE.

Very sad and unfortunate that we lost one precious life of young woman Joyline Monis, aged 24,lecturer by profession, at St.Agnes,Bendorewell.Though it is her fate as one must say,I squarely put a blame on RTO because of their lethargic attitude because of the political pressure.Entire traffic system in our twin districts-Udupi/Mangalore is filthy without any proper discipline and law and order coupled with rash and reckless driving by the drivers, whether it is city bus, private bus, rickshaw and two wheelers. Without any fears, road manners, drivers are driving as if they flying aeroplane. First of all RTO should improve infrastructure like proper roads, proper access, foot paths, signals at the junctions and proper training to the drivers.Unless these basic required, this type of accidents will continue without any brake.Who will be the loser, poor parents of the victims. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolence on the sad and untimely demise of young, energetic Ms.Monis and Pray to God to grant her departed soul an eternal peace and courage, strength, patience to the bereaved family members especially to Monis parents to overcome this irreparable sorrow and loss.RIP

    Really sad incident. RIP Joyline.

    Dear friends,
If you are riding two wheelers, please keep a closer look on the edges of road. The tar road is much higher than actual ground level & two wheeler riders get panicked when heavy vehicles comes with speed from behind and end up in skidding their bikes, which is very risky. There is high possibility of losing control in this situation. So, please be careful.

Yes, we can not go against our destiny, but we can be extra cautious & avoid unnecessary hassles.

One more victim of notorious unscientific concrete Road edges of Mangalore city.
Daily at least ten people fall from their two wheelers mainly women when their scooters slip at the edge of steep road edges in our city. All concrete Roads in Mangalore have steep edges and authorities never pay attention to rectify the same since last two years.
Couple of months back I also slipped on such a sharp edge of concrete road near Mannagudda junction, But luckily there was no vehicle coming behind me.

How many lives need to be lost for the authorities to take action. The city buses are driven so recklessly. No rules apply to them. Recently when I stopped a bus becos it was driven rashly, a traffic cop came and tried finding fault in me for stopping the bus rather than taking action against the bus driver. His argument was the bus had not hit my car. When I started arguing with him, he let the bus go and took my car's photo. It is sickening. It's a open secret how pvt bus owners have connection with police and authorities. As long as corruption exists, our society will never get justice. It is sickening and disgusting how police side with these arrogant drivers and buses. Where is justice in this country?

Why just blame the Driver? yes, of course he is at fault. Why was there no proper safety measures set by the authorities?
Road construction work is going on in Mangalore since 12-15 years. Its never ending.
Has anybody ever seen a traffic police deployed at the construction start / End point? How many sign boards are kept at place?
What safety has been provided for the people crossing these under construction areas during the nights? Have you seen any reflectors? Any personnel holding the red blinking lights to alert the vehicles?
Cows life is valued in this country and not humans.
No point in sitting and crying over the spilt milk.
Authorities have to answer the above question.

Unfortunately these drivers are Let Go even after claiming innocent young lives like this. When they drive buses they dont just care about smaller vehicles on roads, they just blow their horn trumpets and keep speeding on roads.
Young life has gone, but killer driver will survive still & you will see him drive in a couple of days again. His boss, owner of the bus give give enough money to departments to close case & buses will run again. But this Monis family has lost a Young Budding Life. Can we imagine plea of her parents, siblings n family..!!
Can this driver bring her back to life yet again?

That horn sounds VERY SCARY. i noticed boys also take cross and go to the footpath to survive espically jyothi hampankatta road after signal. while getting down in stops they wont care the older people. before getting down they staet and many elderly people died and injured badly. still these drivers and conductors have very hard heart.if such incident takesplace that should be announced and protested each and everytime and the previous accidents also should be repeated. then these hard hearted drivers and conductors may correct their paths and may drive with care hereafer. all accidentents ignored by public which encourages them. drivers and conductors will not think that other people also human beings taken care of and it is their duty also.

The citizens of Mangalore may be wise but dont have guts to catch hold of such rash drivers and the bus.If the same type of accident happened in any other city of Karnataka, including Bangalore, the public would have burnt the bus and taken the driver to task. But the public of Mangalore?Good for shedding crocodile tears.Where are the Human Right organizations and activists? Why dont they raise their voice? Do we need such private city buses who kill people very often? Where are our political leaders? Are they concerned about the lives of Mangaloreans? Will they put pressure on Govt to bring KSRTC managed city buses in Mangalore City? Or simply watch people dying in road accidents? If a driver kills a man in any type of accidents in the Gulf, he is made to pay Rs.25 lakhs or more blood money to the family of the deceased. The driver will be in jail until he pays the blood money. So drivers are very cautious on the roads.Such stringent laws should be brought in to minimize road accidents.Just expressing grief, RIP etc wont help.Everybody cant afford a car.So they use two wheelers.

But the common people are to be blamed as much as the administration. I take this route for work daily and I see even though it has to blocked for traffic coming from Nantoor, all two wheelers and many autos and some cars even come the opposite side. With the road work going on, it becomes difficult for the normal traffic to flow because of this nuisance. To save a few minutes and few bucks on fuel, people very conveniently take things for granted. Why cant we have enough patience, take a longer route and avoid disasters? When we do not have the courtesy to follow traffic rule, why do we blame the administration or for that matter anyone else? A life is lost, with this we lose a daughter, a sister, a teacher. Are we ready to take responsibility for this? Many accidents are avoidable if we as individuals follow the rules. Let us not forget that traffic rules are meant for our safety!

The entire problem is because of what I understand is the 'hafta' system that is prevalent in Mangalore. I am told the bus owners' association pays the police department a certain amount to take care of such accidents. That, in effect, is the licence for the drivers to drive in a rash manner. The result is there for all to see. Innocent people have to lay down their lives so that the drivers drive the way they want and knowing pretty well that nothing would happen to them. The whole system is corrupt. I have lost hope in this system which is corrupt from top to bottom. The problem is where do people go, whom do they complain to???????

This will lead to rash driving and lead to accidents. now this is high time to replace these private buses to KSRTCS and follow discipline and timings.

Very sad incident. Incompetent, Corrupt RTO officials, Corrupt Politicians to be sacked at first. Corrupt Politicians pick Corrupt officials of their choice who issue driving licences to incompetent, uncivilised drivers who blow irritating Horns to scare small vehicles. Strict action should be taken on Bus owners who install such irritating, noisy horns. Cancel the license of Bus Driver as well as the bus. Corrupt system ruining everything even the lives of innocent people.

very sad, why city bus drivers recklessly driven on the road? this indicates failure of our traffic system & negligence by traffic police. when roads are getting under repair or construction, police should not allow heavy vehicles on such road. they dont know the value of people who killed by an accident. everyday one by one road accidents happen in the city, its really a pathetic situation. if this continues here, smart city would be a big question mark for us, what do you say?

True private city buses are a nuisance by the way they are driven by some less-evolved people. Even all ksrtc buses are not a lot better. Here I believe it's more the unsafe road construction going on that's the cause. Hope concerned authorities wake up to the realities at least now and undertake safe procedures. Sad incident nevertheless losing such a young life. May her soul rest in piece and God be with her parents through such a harrowing experience.

    RIP to the Joyline,

poor road condition and reckless driving is never ending problem in India not only in Mangalore.

i do not agree with the people who say there is no traffic rules & regulations. It is the people who do not follow any of the rules.
How many of our Children wear Helmet?? for style they do not wear them at all..& how many of you take serious action on the kids not wearing helmet?? i can say very less people do that. We have so many boards inside the bus stating please call this number if the driving is reckless how many of you have called??? No one does...

Do not expect everything from the Govt. or any authorities. You be the first one to change things rather than blaming the authorities.

Every day I have observed that these bus drivers are driving bus like something going to end up... It's just because they feel safe by sitting in a Giant vehicle... There is no safety fo two wheeler riders... Government have announced that we should wear Helmet.. Now what's the use.. Even if she put the helmet she passed away... What the cops were doing when the vehicles were passing from wrong side.. They are busy in completing their target.. They are not bothered about someone's life...

Very unfortunate and sad incident. Young life snatched away due to the negligence of the driver. Rest in peace Joyline.
I have been travelling in this unfortunate bus for the last 5 years every morning to work and just quit it a month back due to the reason this particular driver doesn't care for anybody on the road especially the 2 wheelers. I have had so many fights with him reminding that our families wait for us to come back safely. I have been witness to so many near misses in this bus. But he just feels its not his concern. Unfortunately, today my daughter travelled in this bus and had to witness this terrible sight.
Time to teach the drivers some ethics and respect to others lives.

This Nanthoor circle should be renamed 'Miracle Circle'..for the simple reason that it's a miracle if you survive riding out from there. You do not know from which side, angle a vehicle is going to hit you! Dunno who designed it and all that..but think flyovers are there in places where we do not really need them and not in places of need.
I think many an article was written
here in this portal by Florine & Co. on this 'Death Circle'. Will the authorities concerned wake up?
    R.I.P. Joyline..
Feel for your near and dear ones and also your students. They must be devastated on hearing this tragic news...

    RIP.
THERE IS NO CHANCE OF IMPROVEMENT IN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN AND AROUND MANGALORE WHICH IS ALREADY DECIDED WHILE DECLARING AS SMART CITY.
BAIKAMPADY IS ONE MORE CLASSIC EXAMPLE IN THAT MATTER.
TRAFFIC POLICE ARE MUTE SPECTATORS WHEN EVER ACCIDENTS HAPPEN BECAUSE RTO POLICE NEVER RAISE OBJECTIONS ON BUSES WHO DO NOT OBEY THE RULES AND EVERYBODY IS AT HIS FANCY ON NH

O my God....What a death. Very very sad. Very pretty...beautiful and full of life. Sooo young to die. No one Knows the date and time of death.
So many accidents in Mangalore now a days. Reckless driving. May God give strength and courage to her parents near and dear ones to bear this great loss. May her soul Rest in Peace in Heaven.

The accident at this junction is always "when?" and not "How" or "why?"
The administration, the police seem to forget the rule - Cause and effect.

As I commented on the traffic rules traffic safety program conducted by the police, having a safety week is not enough. When the traffic congestion at Nanthur is due to improper and shortsightedness - the best way is to first correct this and lessen the congestion.

Why cant we plan for a underpass for the smooth and uninterrupted flow of NH17 traffic? Why do we the public put up with ( tolerate) with the daily traffic jam at this place? Why cant we show little intolerance to begin with?

We Manga-lurians have misplaced priorities. We are too busy whatsapping on issues of who is a patriot and who is not or who is against one religion and who is not. We do not even think this death as a eye opener . we do not feel any reservation to travel by the same road everyday as we think the death is due to ones fate and not due to human negligence at the highest level!

I have a genuine doubt if majority of the readers will even go through this article.

one more precious life is gone paying off for bloody our infrastructure and evil drivers. We just protest for a while, police comes, convince the public and we will be back to our routine life with in no time. the loss will be for her family and closed ones. I bet nothing will happen to the driver. he will be in the same bus tomorrow , driving with same recklessness. that's the fact.

RIP This bad incident occurred due to negligence of rider, because when the traffic police made it one way road. Why these motorcycle riders are going towards that way? Even when road is under construction. Traffic police officials should not entertain the motorcyclists to go from nathoor towards kadri.
