Mangaluru: IAF technician dies at railway station after accidental fall

Mangaluru, Mar 25: In a tragic incident, a man serving in the Indian Air Force (IAF) died after he accidentally fell down the steps of the foot overbridge at Mangaluru Central railway station here on Friday March 25.

The deceased has been identified as K K Manoj Kumar (33), a resident of Anandashrama, Kodathu in Kanhangad.

Manoj had been serving as aircraft technician in the IAF at Nashik.

It is learnt that he was on vacation and had planned to go to his hometown. After reaching Mangaluru, he was supposed to catch a train to Kanhangad.

On Friday morning at around 7.25 am, he bought a ticket to Kanhangad at Central railway station. The train was to leave at 7.50 am from the second platform. When he was crossing the foot overbridge from first platform to the second, he accidentally slipped from the top of the stairs and fell unconsious.

The people at the spot immediately called the ambulance, but by the time it arrived, he was already dead, sources said.

Sources also said that as he was coming home after duty in Nashik, he had a few pieces of luggage with him.

Manoj was the son of Kunhambu and Nalini, residents of Kodathu. He was married to Nalini and the couple has a two-and-a-half-year-old son. 

Railway police registered a case and also informed Manoj's family.

    With so many aspirations and with day dreams he has come on leave and about to go to his native place to see his wife and child also his parents. But alas due to his heavy bag he lost control and fell down. What kind of fate. May his soul rest in peace.

    The RPF and people who were watching the secene dont know what to do.

    They were just watching that person.

    Me and my colleague reached that platform.

    We told RPF people to call 108. But they didnt call them.

    My colleague called 108 . We called around 8.10am

    Ambulance came immediately but when entering him in ambulance he died.

    If someone called ambulance immediately after he fell. We could have save his life.

    Yes, the people always want to be just on lookers rather than swiftly acting in an emergency. I will not surprised if there is a video coming up in you-tube about his fall because people will be busy in clicking the pics and video. RPF should be trained ho to manage medical emergencies, not just on security issues.above all there should be enough safety in place in the platforms and bridges. Escalators can help but they can pose different type of problems at least in India where most elders cant use the escalators. The normal steps should have proper handrails for support and there should more lifts though it is not for the people of this age group. At 33 and being in RAF he must be fit to climb more than this platform bridges but unfortunately it is a freakish accident which perhaps could not have averted but what happened after his fall is shocking.
