Beltangady, Apr 1: Beltangady police produced a woman in court through body warrant here on Thursday, March 31 for allegedly duping people of Rs 73 lac.
Vishalakshi Bhat, from Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district, is the accused.
Vishalakshi has been in Parappana Agrahara prison in Bengaluru facing trial. Vishalakshi was arrested on 17 December 2015 in Uttar Pradesh on charges of cheating hundreds of people to the tune of Rs 40 crore.
She worked as the manager of HDFC Life’s BTM Layout branch in Bengaluru. Once people started complaining about her cheating, she ran away to Uttar Pradesh from where she was apprehended.
Vishalakshi befriended people from business sectors, film industry and top government officials and collected money from them as premium towards life insurance policies. But she did not deposit the money with the company. Her victim includes a relative of Housing Minister M H Ambareesh.
A rice mill owner in Beltangady was asked to deposit Rs 1.16 crore in relation to an insurance policy. He deposited the same through RTGS facility. The rice mill owner complained after it was revealed that Vishalakshi was involved in several cheating cases. Rs 73.6 lac remained to be paid to the rice mill owner while the balance was recovered. Total 14 cases stand registered against the accused in various police stations of the State. All the cases are handled by Bengaluru CCB police.
The court has remanded the accused to judicial custody.
