Mangaluru, Apr 2: Policy Flag Day was observed jointly by the city police commissionerate, Dakshina Kannada district police and KSRP at police grounds here on Saturday April 2.
ASP (probation) Ryshyanth led the parade. Six contingents of the police force, namely the Karnataka State Reserve Police, district Armed Reserve Police, civil police and traffic police accompanied by the police band participated in the celebration.
Addressing the gathering, retired retired ASP M Shankarappa recalled his 34 years of service in the police department and said, "I started my service in this district, served in different districts and retired in this district. We should have patience and confidence in ourselves, only then can we find solution to any problem. Today the police face a greater challenge with incidents of communal violence and different protests taking place now and then. Whenever there is a function we are asked to provide security. If some unpleasant incident occurs and is highlighted in media, fingers are pointed at us. It is really sad that we are just used when necessary.
"Whenever there is any problem we should inform our higher official and find solution. When we inform them in advance it becomes easier to tackle the problem. When we call KSRP and other forces in some instances, we should make necessary arrangements for them. We should not wait for our higher officials to give directions in case of emergencies. These all are small things which we need to instill in our work. Health is very important for any police personal, so take care of it. Better health helps to serve better."
Mangaluru police commissioner Chandrasekar said, "A police official works for 16 to 17 hours in his tenure of 34-35 years. In these 16 to 17 hours, he is either mentally occupied or physically. Police job is stressful. So we should show our gratitude to the retired police officials who have served in our department for such a long time. We had put forth many demands in front of the government and now the canteen facility has been extended to the retired police officials also. We assure you that we will try our best to provide the best to the police personnel."
On the occasion, retired ASP M Shankarappa released the police flags which were later sold to the members present. The money collected from these flags will be used for the welfare of police personnel.
As many as 75 police personnel who retired in the year 2015-16 were honoured on the occasion.
Inspector general police (western range) Amrit Paul, superintendent of police Dr Sharanappa S D and others were also present.
