Azadi from caste : Rohith Vemula's mother, brother to embrace Buddhism

Mumbai, Apr 13 (PTI) : The family of Dalith research scholar Rohith Vemula, whose suicide at Hyderbad Central University in January created a firestorm of protest, would be converting to Buddhism, Babasaheb Ambedkar's grandson Prakash Ambedkar said on Wednesday.

Tomorrow is the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar, the Dalit icon and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.
Rohith's mother and brother will be given "deeksha" by Buddhist monks, Prakash Ambedkar, a former MP, said.

Rohith's mother and brother will be given "deeksha" by Buddhist monks, Prakash Ambedkar, a former MP, said. The ceremony will be held at noon at Ambedkar Bhavan in Dadar here, he said.

"We have organised the deeksha ceremony as the family approached us," he added.
When contacted, Rohith's younger brother Raja Vemula said "it is true that we are going to embrace Buddhism. We are on the way to Mumbai."

“I have no ill feeling toward Hindus but my conscience doesn’t allow me to continue in this religion. It is because of the Hindu caste system that my brother was harassed, humiliated and forced to take his own life,” Rohit's brother Raja told Hindustan Time on Wednesday.

“Millions of Dalits have suffered, just like my brother did, for thousands of years because of the Hindu caste system.”

They will follow in the footsteps of Ambedkar, who led millions of his followers into Buddhism in 1951, months before his death.

“I was born a Hindu but will not die one,” Ambedkar famously said, as he exhorted Dalit communities to choose Buddhism because of what he called its inclusive nature and lack of discriminatory structures.

They went through horrific time. No matter whether it is the fault of someone else or her own son, she suffered the biggest loss. Hope the family find peace. I only wish that time heals and they move on with their life.

Its up to the people to decide what religion they want to follow.. Let them lead normal lives and not continue to be political tools!!!!!!

Even Buddhism is not free from sectarianism. Mahayana and Hinayana are the two major sects of Buddhism, formed in the earlier centuries and it is learnt some more sects were formed in later period.

As per the article, she was born in SC/ST, but his father mentioned that they are not Dalits. His mother created all the ruckus and accused Central government even when rohith mentioned in his letter the no one but his own organization ASPA was part responsible. The state is headed by TMC so where in the hell did PM come in picture, why is his mother going behind the central govt? She was to cash in on this even after Rohith mentioned that he doesn't hold anybody to be responsible and didnt want any issues after his death. My heart is with poor rohith but not with his mother.

Good Riddance..Religion Lies in faith...and in case of Rohith, He died as he was suspended for creating trouble in College..Which could have been legally fought even if he was a innocent..Not required to use the Dalit /Religion Tag for any of these issues including his suicide.. He was responsible for his own death.
And all this publicity stunt of embracing any religion on Ambedkar Jayanti looks very Filmi..

Everything that passes down the line from ancestors is not good.
One of that is divisive caste system and destructive superstitions.
Even decades after abandoning jobs on the basis of castes, system practiced and prevailed generations ago is strongly passed on to generation after generation.
Any use? Is it benefited to humanity or nation? Surely it is futile exercise!

To say it as "Azadi" from caste is misnomer. They will declare themselves as Neo-Buddhist which will entitle for reservation. The original Buddhism is not followed anywhere as it promotes atheism, scientific questioning and doing away with rituals. As human beings encounter several sufferings it is difficult to practice Buddhism as it does not have any answer for their sufferings or to provide some hope in the form of miracle/blessings by God.
As an answer tibetian Buddhism introduced some gods, rituals, mantras and meditation.

I don't see why Rohith makes it a big thing out of his conversion to Buddhism. , Buddhism did not evolve as an independent faith for it is simply and off-shoot of much earlier faith ie. Hinduism. Buddha himself was raised as a Hindu . Buddhism rejected many unpleasant aspects of Hinduism such as Castism, stupid rituals...etc. but retained so many aspects of Hinduism. Buddha is an Avatar of Hinduism.

Buddha was the greatest son of Indian civillization and one of the greatest teachers of humankind! So wish you well Rohith!
