Mangaluru, Apr 13: "In order to avoid untoward incidents, HPCL should strictly follow the terms and conditions in its agreement when bullet tankers carry liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and take strict action if there is any violation," said superintendent of police (SP), Dakshina Kannada, Dr S D Sharanappa.
He was speaking in a meeting organized with various oil companies at his office here on Wednesday April 13.
"In the event of an accident, the time taken by the quick response vehicles (QRV) to reach the spot should be reduced by at least 50%. The number of QRV units and personnel should be increased to tackle any situation. HPCL should ensure that the victims of any accident get proper treatment and compensation. Visit the families of victims and ensure that they have received proper compensation in gas tragedies," SP directed HPCL.
Speaking on the occasion, Jnanashekar, senior manager of HPCL said, "Around 250 gas tankers ply from the plant to various places. As many as 100 gas tankers travel through Shiradi Ghat. Quick response vehicles rush to the spot whenever an accident takes place. A QRV has been stationed at Gundya."
Thiruvasagam, manger of safety, HPCL import terminal said, "Once in six months, workshops are held to train tanker drivers. Drivers are recruited as per the contract agreement. Each tanker has a driver and a cleaner."

Replying to this, a police inspector said, "Whenever there have been tanker accidents, no cleaners were found but only drivers. The QRV has no technical engineers."
Officers of HPCL also said that during 2015-16 nearly 30 accidents have taken place in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.
