Mangaluru, Apr 16: "Proposal to start a juvenile home for girls in the city has already been sent to the government. Once approval is obtained from the government, we will start the juvenile home in a temporary building till land is sanctioned," said state minister for Kannada and culture and women and child development, Umashree.
She was addressing a press meet after holding a review meeting with officials at the zilla panchayat office here on Saturday April 16.
Informing about the decreased malnutrition cases in district, she said, "In 2015-16, 148 children have been found to be suffering from malnutrition in the district, out of which, 119 children are premature babies. I have suggested ZP CEO to keep a watch on pregnant women with the help of ASHA and Anganawadi workers to solve the problem of anaemia, on an experimental basis.
"During 2014-15, infant mortality rate was 11.44% which has come down in 2015-16 to 10.80%. Under the Sthairiya Nidhi programme, women will get Rs 25,000 as immediate assistance and in case of death, victims will get Rs 1,00,000 as compensation," she added.
"Under the Samrudhi programme, government will sanction Rs 10 crore to 10,000 women street vendors in the state. The department will provide Rs 50,000 loan for HIV infected women to run their ventures and Rs 10,000 will be the subsidy amount.”

Drought situation in Bidar
Umashree on Saturday April 16 also addressed party workers at the district Congress office here.
On the drought situation in Bidar of which she is the district in-charge minister, Umashree said, "State is facing severe drought. Necessary steps have been taken. I have convened a meeting with officials and directed them to provide water through tankers to villages where there is acute shortage.
"Work on deepening of government borewells has been undertaken. Task force has formed in every gram panchayat, comprising tahsildar, panchayat development officer, executive officer and other officials. They have been given all freedom to take necessary steps based on the necessity and priority. De-silting of ponds and wells has also been undertaken. With all these steps, water problem in the district has solved to an extent."
MUDA chairman Kodijal Ibrahim, MLA Shakunthala Shetty, T K Sudhir and others were present.
