Garment factory workers protest in Bengaluru- police lathicharge

Bengaluru, Apr 18 (Agencies): Over 10,000 garment factory workers went on a protest on Monday opposing the new labour policy of the Centre.

The protest went out of control when the protestors pelted stones at police vehicles. The police resorted to lathicharge to control the unruly mob in which a few people, including police personnel, are reported to be injured.

The huge gathering of garment workers at the protest site also caused traffic jam on the Hosur road.

The workers are protesting against the new Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) norms in which the subscribers will not be able to claim withdrawal of their provident fund after attaining age of 54 years. They would have to wait till reaching 57 years.

However, as per the earlier norms, the EPFO subscribers were allowed to claim 90 per cent of their accumulations in their PF account at the age of 54 years and their claims were settled just one year before their retirement.

Now, EPFO has decided to change the new rules that restrict employees from withdrawing their entire provident fund (PF) balance till the age of 58.The EPFO has brought in norms that exclude subscribers falling in certain categories. According to amended norms, a subscriber can withdraw his or her entire savings for housing purpose, treatment of himself/herself or family members suffering from TB (tuberculosis), leprosy, paralysis, cancer or undergoing heart operation, marriage of children as well as professional education (medical, engineering, dental) of children. The Central Govt., blindly apes the west by adopting their laws which are inhuman which is the cause for such protests. We blundered by adopting a Constitution, a mixture of the constitution of too many countries, without considering the ground realities in India. With nearly 40% of the population below poverty line in India, the government should ensure that the human rights and fundamental rights of the workers are protected. The Government in India neither gives unemployment allowance nor free medical aid to the citizens but is engrossed in stealing the hard earned savings of the common man by reducing interest rates on savings, increasing interest on loans, placing restrictions on the freedom of using the savings taxing interest on savings etc which indicates that a person who plans his savings will end up getting a pittance in returns for his money at the end of the day. Absolutely no effort is made by the central government to improve governance, eradicate corruption use technology to save the common man from red tape just to name a few. The people are fed with empty rhetoric of "Aache Din Aayega" and a bundle of lies let loose during elections to capture power which is the order of the day. Labour policy is the worst in our country with no rule implemented in its true spirit and the worker has become the beast of burden because of the lax policy of the government. When illiterates are made Ministers who do not know the number of labour laws in India and the provision of each law which affect the common man, what more can the citizens expect? ONLY LATHICHARGE!!! The fundamental right to profession gives a reasonable restriction that the person aspiring to become a professional should possess the competent qualification which unfortunately does not apply to our Central Government Ministers. The Statute should specify qualification for all the Ministers to head the Office. Otherwise it will be bureaucrats coming up with inhuman regulations.
