Mangaluru: Mallikatta - Nanthoor road opens for traffic

Mangaluru, Apr 18: The road from Mallikatta to Nanthoor circle, stretching 350 meters concreted at a cost of Rs 285 lacs, opened for traffic on Monday April 18.

The newly-concreted road was inaugurated by district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai.

In his address Rai said, "This is a very important road in Mangaluru. The project was undertaken with funds from the chief minister's third phase of Rs 100 crore grant for development works. We are developing a model road from Nanthoor to Nandigudda which will be completed shortly. All these developments will benefit the commuters in the city."

MLA J R Lobo thanked the mayor, MCC commissioner and engineers for completing the work on time and said, "We aim to develop four-lane model road from Nanthoor to Nandigudda. Accordingly, we have completed a stretch from Nanthoor to Mallikatta and work on Kankanady to Nandigudda stretch is under progress. A few works like streetlights, drains, footpaths and other facilities will be completed very soon. This will give a new look to the city."

Mayor Harinath, MCC commissioner Gopalkrishna, corporator Ashok D K, Denis D'Silva, Purushotham Chirtapur, Asha D'Silva, T K Sudheer, Sabitha Misquith,  Stany Alvares , Pius Rodrigues and others were present.

    Why are politicians required to inaugurate a road? Residents around the locality, especially the senior citizens who had to bear the brunt of dirt, noise & inconvenience should have the honor of doing the same.

    I agree with Ms Ann. Also see the waste of tax payers money to ferry the politicians all the way just for this ? One politician had to come by official car all the way from Bantwal. This is a criminal waste. Im sorry that a person like Mr.J.R.Lobo too is stooping to this silly nonsense. I expected much more from him. What would have happened if senior people of the area were called to cut the ribbon ?

    I wonder if the water pipelines and drainage pipes have been replaced with larger ones before concretisation of this stretch of road ? The footpath is not ready and may take another 3 years or so. This is the irony of our ribbon cutters.

    Indian roads are for vehicles,cows,dogs,cycles,motorcycles ,rain water,sewage and for pedestrians all together.So Indian planners do not think there is need for footpath,drainage etc

    Good roads necessary for the development of the city not only real estate people even aamadmi common people are beneficial for example shakthinagar developed because of concrete roads it's political parties misleading people by saying only real estate people are benefited .so development of every roads are important please cooperate with development of Mangalore city

    Its a good thing that our roads are being concreted here and there.But dont take up such projects where traffic disrupts and also comple works within the stipulated time to over come inconvenience to public.

    Please see to it that people get adequate footpath beside the roads. If there no proper finishing or footpath these elevated concreate roads may be disaster for two wheeler rider at the edge.

    Problem everywhere. How good road will be...after some days either electricity people or telephone people or gas people come and dig. Why not people decide in the beginning itself. It's happening in all the cities and latter do it worst.

    How can you say there were no roads. Roads were concretized or repaired. Development is an ongoing process irrespective of who is in power. I can't understand why every issue has to be politicized.

    Yes. During the BJP rule some roads were concretised to help a few selected real estate developers. The value of their properties jumped up 300 times. This is a fact. One such road is the Bijai bus stand to Kavoor road via Derebail. It was done in record time and even the drainage pipes were replaced by broader ones. Even new street lights were installed just to promote this real estate developer. No where else in Mangalore at that time were the drainage pipes replaced by larger pipes. Probably the BJP were hoping for a fresh contract to cut the concrete road and again lay new pipes. But by that time the BJP lost its holding in Karnataka and in the MCC. This is shamelessly the truth.

    Congrats to all Mangalureans, on this creditable achievement. Hope this will be an example for Bengalureans (where you can find some of the worst roads in India), to emulate.

    Also, along with concretisation (which will raise the surrounding temperature by a few degrees), care should be taken not to chop off the existing huge, lovely, shade-giving trees, which help to maintain the balance in nature.

    Wherever possible, tree-planting activities should be planned and undertaken, especially during the ensuing monsoons, which would help in providing relief from the ever-increasing/unbearable mercury levels.
