The arrested persons are Abdul Khader (37) from Kalavaru village and Muhammed Shariff (47) from Krishnapura. They were arrested on Sunday April 17 and produced in the court on Monday. They were remanded by the court to judicial custody.
Bharatraj, a BJP leader, was riding his motor bike on Krishnapur Math road on April 13, when four to five youth aged between 22 to 25 years, who were seated in a Scorpio car, had dashed their vehicle against Bharatraj's motor bike. Two among the occupants of the vehicle then rushed towards Bharatraj, who had fallen on the road, menacingly. It is said both the aggressors were brandishing rod and sword, and were screaming furiously. Bharatraj succeeded in running away and hiding from them. The accused reached the spot where he was hiding and hit him with rod, due to which Bharatraj suffered injuries to his leg. The accused had then escaped, leaving behind the Scorpio vehicle and lethal weapons.
Suratkal police inspector, Cheluvaraju B, sub-inspector, Poovappa H M, and other staff members had taken part in the operation to nab the two accused.
At the same time, a delegation led by former state minister and city north block BJP president, Krishna J Palemar, met city police commissioner, M Chandra Sekhar, on Monday and urged him to intensify the investigation into the murder attempt on young BJP leader and arrest the culprits at the earliest. The delegation, which noted that weapons and cellphones of the attackers were found at the spot, expressed frustration at the fact that the police have failed to arrest the accused even after five days of the incident. The delegation warned of resorting to protest if the process of investigation is found to be tardy.
BJP leaders, Monappa Bhandary, Nitin Kumar, Shankar Bhat, and others were part of the delegation.
