Allow women into Haji Ali dargah: Rights group

Mumbai, Apr 21 (IANS): The Bhumata Ranragini Brigade on Wednesday said it will launch an agitation so that women entry to the famed Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai.

'Haji Ali For All' forum was launched by Brigade president Trupti Desai along with several activists, NGOs and social groups to fight for women's entry to the shrine -- nearly six centuries old and nestling amid the rocks in the Arabian Sea off the Worli shoreline.

In a decision with far-reaching ramifications, the trust managing the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra said on April 8 that women will also be allowed to enter and pray at the open-to-sky platform.

The decision was announced a week after the Bombay High Court ruled that there was no law to prevent women from entering any place of worship.

"We shall launch the agitation at the Haji Ali shrine on April 28. However, we are ready to discuss the issue with its trustees," Desai told the media.

Desai was in the forefront in pressing the demand for women's entry to the temple dedicated to Lord Shanidev.

She said the proposed agitation was not against any religion but only to ensure that there was no gender discrimination at any place of worship.

She called upon all Mulsim women in the country to contact her organisation to highlight alleged gender discrimination at other dargah or shrine in India and promised to take up their cause.

"We are accused of harbouring political motives... But we are living in the 21st century. It is about time to change in this scientific era. A handful of individuals cannot stop us," Desai said.

She said several Muslim women and other groups were fighting for equality vis-a-vis the Haji Ali dargah for years and had even moved courts seeking relief.

These groups want women to be allowed to go to the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and offer 'chadar' and prayers in the sanctum sanctorum, she said.

The Haji Ali Dargah Trust has justified the prevailing custom on the ground that allowing women up to the tomb of the Pir would be 'anti-Islam'.

Now the subject matter is just entry into a praying place. No woman has claimed to become a Shankaracharya or a Pope till now. When it comes to that stage, let us discuss it.

In Islam we are not supposed to visit dargah`s be it it women or men to pray. We do not require mediator`s in between us and god almighty. This is shirkh. We should pray to Allah and no one else.

    Sumi,

a couple of days back there were news about a man visiting 'Chaar Dhaam' with his blind/immobile mother in a basket elevated to his back. He has been walking since twenty plus years, will complete his last last leg in two years of time. What do you say to such faith ? The man is single, is 48 years old, what has he gained in life ? What is his aim in life after mother passes away ? Sounds strange - isn't it ? It does but after all, its faith. We can't help it.

A human being is a species that is never content with its gains. The more they get, even more hungry they are to achieve more.

Imagine a prisoner - he/she may never seen a certain temple, they will satisfy with whatever prayer facilities available within the premises. Will an activist go and fight for them ? No ! Why ? Because those people are offenders - they deserve to be deprived of everything, including of worship at a certain shrine. Well, we are free people, we are trying every new in our path, including women's entry to sancto sanctum of a shrine.

However, its the battle for equality, fight against discrimination and voices made louder to correct something that goes on in every aspect of life. It becomes an issue of superiority to men to give-in, at the same time, inferiority to be succumbing, to women. Beyond all, there is no loss whether women are let to enter prayer houses or not. Nor there is anything human being gain out of prayer at that specific location - because what has to be, will be. If we feel that some good has happened because of our prayers, its a feeling of self-satisfaction and we simply ascribe our gain to a certain deity.
