Udupi, Apr 26: A report by Press Trust of India from Washington has brought the heartening news that considering the community service rendered by Dr Sampat Shivangi, a street at Mississippi has been named after him. 'Dr Sampat Shivangi Lane' gets its name from this 1962 batch student of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Dr Shivangi brought this to the notice of Manipal University chancellor, Dr Ramdas Pai. In turn, Dr Pai has written to Dr Shivangi conveying to him his greetings and best wishes. Dr Pai told him that this is a moment of pride and elation for Manipal University because of an honour conferred for the noble work done by its past student in USA.

Governor of Mississippi, Phil Bryant, has appointed Dr Shivangi to the governing board of mental health of the state for the second term. Dr Shivangi has been re-appointed to this post after completing his first term of seven years with the board. He was the first ever Asian American to have been appointed as the chairman of this board in June 2014. During the period between 2005 and 2008, he had worked as the advisor to American health and human services secretary.

Dr Shivangi happens to be the founder president of American Association of Physicians of Indian origin at Mississippi and president of India Association of Mississippi.

Udipi, which is notorious in changing original street names has a lesson to learn from this gesture.

Recently, Dee Road leading to a famous high school in my neighborhood has been re-named as "Kalpana Chowla Road" to inspire young students to study Space science. How nice and thoughtful!

This is a great gesture and broad mindedness by the people of Mississippi. As a reciprocal, I wish we are equally broad minded when we have to name places in India. I remember there was opposition to name a street in honour of mother Teresa and also to rename Wenlock and Lady goschen hospital. these people had worked to help the population of Mangalore just for goodwill and not make money

I remember the controversy surrounding installation of statue of great Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in Bangalore 9oops it is Bengaluru now).
US authorities take pride in naming roads after likes of Dr. Sampat and Fazlur Khan (Bangladeshi origin structural engineer who designed iconic Sears Towers). They don't consider moolya of great people. Unfortunately we Indians have political considerations in naming roads and airports.

    Congratulations Dr Sampat Shivang.

In India we are busy with changing the names of streets / airports / railway terminus because of somebody wants it and not for any reason.

See what happens in India. Everything in opposite direction.
This is the difference of understanding and lack of broad mind. Actions speak louder.
By changing street names, state names, country names nothing is achieved. On the contrary ones good actions shall be the guiding force to the betterment of the citizens life quality.
