Mangaluru, May 6: Scores of postgraduate (PG) students of Mangalore University on Friday May 6 staged a strong protest over delay in declaring PG results and against inaccuracies.
PG students from all the streams initially gathered at the science block of the University demanded a response from the registrar of evaluations, but as there was no response, they then moved to the administrative block and sought an answer from the vice-chancellor.
The students said that in one of the subjects, only half of the students had got their results. Other than this subject, marks in all subjects are out. However, there was a delay of two months in declaring the results, that too with errors, and now with the fourth semester also getting over, many of the students are yet to get their results of the last semester, they said.
"Those who are supposed to shape the future of students have failed to do them justice. This is really sad," they said.
"KSOU in Mysuru lost its reputation over allegations that it took money from private institutions and declared fake results. The day is not far when Mangalore University too would lose face. Students who are keen to finish their studies and get jobs are now in a dire situation The officials have been giving assurances like politicans. We want all errors in results to be rectified so that students get justice. When questioned, the registrar says the answer sheets got jumbled," they added.
"There is no guarantee that the results that have been declared so far are those of the respective students. This is not a protest against professors or the University, but against the officials of the administrative block. Though the fourth semester has ended, there is still no exam timetable. This is nothing but playing with the future of students," said a student named Rohan.
Registrar's response
The students were determined to continue their protest until they got a response from the registrar of evaluations. Finally, registrar M A Khan arrived at the spot. The vice-chancellor did not allow mike to be used, which led to an altercation between the students and the officials. The situation came under control only after the officials gave in and agreed to use mike.
In his response to the allegations, M A Khan said, "Errors in the results will be sorted out by May 16. It is not right to hold such flash protests and disrupt the administrative system.
When the students demanded to know the reason for the delay in results, he assured that all results would be out in another 15 days.
The students however were not convinced. "It has been four months since we wrote the last semester exam, but part of the results are still not out. Why was there no bar coding in some of the answer sheets? When there were errors in degree results, it was blamed on the software, and now even the PG students are facing a similar situation. What is the guarantee that it will not repeat in the fourth semester exams too? When there is a delay in paying exam fee, we are fined Rs 200. Now when the administration has delayed the results by months, what is the penalty it should pay us?"
The registrar refused to answer. "It is not right to discuss all this openly. We will discuss it inside the administrative block," he said, and left the spot.
The students however still did not give up. They again marched to the administrative block and sat on dharna, asserting that they would not end their protest till they got a clear assurance from the vice-chancellor. The vice-chancellor did not visit them even till evening, and they continued to protest.
The protest was led by students Niranjan, Puneet and others.
