Mangaluru, May 7: The taluk panchayat elections held in the taluk panchayat auditorium turned dramatic as congress supporters entered the auditorium during the wishing ceremony of the newly elected president and the vice-president of the Mangaluru taluk panchayat, here on Saturday May 7.
Soon after the election commissioner and commissioner of Mangaluru revenue sub division Dr Ashok announced the results, Congress supporters entered the auditorium to wish the new president and vice-president and burst party poppers inside the auditorium.
This enraged the opposition leader and the one of the candidates of the vice president’s post Vajrakshi Shetty objected the sudden rush and questioned the taluk panchayat executive officer (EO) Gopalkrishna Bhat for letting them in.
At this moment the congress supporters said that BJP supporters had entered during the previous time. This led to arguments between Congress and BJP supporters.
Further, executive officer tried to stop media persons covering the drama which led to another argument between the EO and the media persons. The police had to intervene and bring situation under control.
In the elections, congress supported candidate Mohammed Monu defeated his counterpart Ramachandra Kumpala with 20 to 19 votes and Poornima Poojary also from Congress defeated the BJP supported candidate Vajrakshi Shetty with the same margin.
Ministers UT Khader, Abhayachandra Jain, MLA Moideen Bawa, MLC Iavn D'souza felicitated the winners before the drama began.
