Mangaluru, May 10: Biodegradable waste produced in the city will be converted into organic compost and will be sold to the farmers by Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) within next few months. This has been made possible after MCF, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and Unique Waste Management Company signed an agreement in the third week of April. The agreement copy was handed over to MCF and Unique Waste Management Company at the MCC office by Mayor Harinath on Tuesday, May 10.
Addressing the gathering, Harinath said that "It is a very good agreement to handle the large amount of waste produced in the city. The corporation will get the subsidy of Rs 1,000 per tonne from the union government,"
As per the agreement between the parties concerned, the waste will be converted into compost by Unique Waste Management Company and the MCC has to pay Rs 1.5 lac per month to the company. The compost will be marketed by MCF and they have to pay Rs 2,500 per tonne in return.
The city produces about 275 tonnes of waste per day which is dumped at the dumping yard Pachanady.
MCC commissioner Gopalakrishna and chief whip Sashidhar Hegde were present on the occasion.
