Bantwal, May 17: River Netravati, which is sans water now, has turned into cricket ground for sports enthusiasts.

Near Netravati bridge at Panemangalore, water level has completely gone down, exposing a big stretch of sand. A group of youngsters have turned this dry stretch into a cricket ground. Every evening this team or some other teams are found playing cricket at this stretch.

Since the last about 45 days, River Netravati has parched, creating a worrying situation all over the district. People of Mangaluru have been hankering for water as a result. Farmers near the river, commercial users, and construction industry etc have been barred from using water, and the river water has been restricted to drinking purposes alone.

As work on the new dam at Thumbay is progressing, since some time, water was being collected at AMR Dam, Shambhoor, from where water was being released to Thumbay dam as and when required. There is no water in Shambhoor dam now, and the water level at Thumbay dam has gone down to 3.9 feet, and the city faces risk of being denied water supply through taps unless heavy rains appear. All through the length and breadth of River Netravati, boulders and sand on the riverbed can alone be seen now.

Near Panemangalore bridge, people are able now to cross the river on their feet, without depending on the bridge.

If villages in Rajasthan that get just 2 weeks of our July rainfall for the whole year can have water in summers, then there must be something fundamentally wrong in our water management methods.

DK/Udupi gets some of the heaviest rainfall in India, yet we have this problem in summers. That is because the topography is a slope from Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea. That's why DK doesn't have any large lakes. It doesn't matter how much water falls in during the monsoons, it is not going to last in the summer. Period.

The ONLY way...I repeat....ONLY way is to do what our wise grandparents did (before today's borewell craze set in and created havoc on our water table). They built......CHECK DAMS. That recharges ground water and fills up wells. The high ground water levels also drives natural streams that feed into the river.

Protesting Yettinahole will not solve this problem if there is no water in summer, what can anyone divert? Focus should be on maximizing monsoon water utilization which is thousands of crore litres of pure water flowing into the salty Arabian sea.

We need a mass movement to build these small check dams in all our village streams.

This all types of chaos only because of bad planning by our respectable MCC authorities, irresponsible politicians laxity, politicization by the state government. In reality we the common public are the sufferers.Public rallies, protests and bandhs etc are really waste of money, precious time and public loss and gross loss to the country in general and people of the state in particular. But under the present scenario these are very much needed just to draw the attention of state government and awake the sleeping MLAs,MPs and other elected representatives. We all support the Bandh for the sake of our fundamental rights.Nobody stops us because we need water to survive.Water is the main source of our life. Therefore we all in together warn all the political leaders, elected representatives and concerned authorities to get up from their sleep and convey this serious matter to the kind attention of the state government and ask the government to put a stop once for all for Netravati Project.Otherwise consequence/implication will be very severe and serious.STOP NETRAVATI PROJECT,SAVE WATER FOR THE PEOPLE OF MANGALURU/DAKSHINA KANNADA PEOPLE.

anna, we have wasted 69 years by blame game & praising the congress party. but still garibi is there & problem like roti, makan, kapda till exist. we only created the problem by blindly supporting political parties without any development. it is very clear that centre is sanctions the funds for smart city & state should implement all the basic infrastructures like, water, road.... etc by utilising the fund.

jossey, first dismiss the state govt then do the development. sometime there is no meaning for your comment. it is the cong govt stick on diverting the nethravati river even though local people oppose it. but you are sitting in Mumbai writing irrelevant thing. why cant your cong state govt do some development instead of useless bhagyas.

Time for sand mafia to take over.

We might have to seriously think of setting up sea-water desalination plants, as they have done in the Gulf Countries. Then only, there will be enough water for all - the builders, industrialists, commercial organisations, as well as for domestic consumption. This could be planned as the 1st step towards "Smart City Mangaluru"
