Daijiworld Media Network –Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 19: As part of the district bandh observed by the Nethravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti (NRSS) demanding to scrap the ongoing Yettinahole project, the organization held protest near Wenlock Hospital, Hampankatte by blocking the road here on Thursday May 19.

Slamming the state government over Yettinahole project, president of Samiti, Vijayakumar Shetty said, “Irrespective of religion, community, caste and even children of Bharat Mata joined and supported this protest. Our intention is to stop the river diversion and save the Nethravati river.”

“With support of these youths, we will stop this project which will harm the people of coastal region. In future, we will continue our struggle and we appeal for the cooperation of all people,” he added.

Addressing the protesters, Esha Vittaldas Swamijji of Kemaru Math said, “State government should come forward to scrap this project. People of Tulu Nadu without any discrimination on caste and religion should fight against this project.”

“I will always be ready to support the decisions of the committee against this project,” he added.

Fr J B Crasta said, “The peaceful bandh organized against Yettinahole project is a role model in entire district. In future our voice should reach Bengaluru demanding the government to stop this project.”

Speaking on the occasion, activist Dinesh Holla said, “Three and a half years ago, we gave a memorandum to state government to preserve the Western ghats. No projects should be implemented in Western ghats which would harm its natural beauty. Hence the government should stop this project which will harm the Western ghats as well the people of Dakshina Kannada.”

This entire project is based on the assumption that there is excess water in the D.K region. Instead of wasting crores of money without guaranteed results, a simple solution could be to dispatch excess water from nethravati during rainy seasons to drought regions and implementing efficient water storage solutions. Even If we did that for next hundred years, i bet it could still be more cost effective.

90% of the people travelling to Bangalore from Mangalore travel by the night bus. But if you travel by the day bus or car you would see the tremendous destruction of the Shiradi forest and hills adjacent to the road. It is sad and pathetic. Actually water is to be pumped from the western side ( Mangalore side ) of the western ghats uphill to Saklespur and to Kolar, Chickaballapur & Davangere. Mangalore will suffer with water problem henceforth. The local wells in Mangalore are contaminated and the MCC does nothing about it inspite of several complaints. Moreover there has been no proper planning of Mangalore City. Inspite of water problem building licences are issued for construction. There is nobody to check if water harvesting is done. Most buildings are illegal in Mangalore and have deviated from the original plan. No legal action is taken to demolish the illegal structure by the MCC as finally money talks. We citizens have to be blamed for this apathy.

On yesterdays bundh, how is Ex MLA Vijaya Kumar Shetty involved with the Bajrang Dal goons ? The goons were happily moving in an auto forcing petrol pumps at Balmatta junction to close down. Although policemen were around they turned a blind eye to this. This is Administrative failure and the policemen should be taken to task. The CCTV at the petrol pump will show it all.

If we had excess water, we wouldn't have had water scarcity since the last two years. But this year, the scarcity is severe. And things wont improve in the future either, especially water which is a scarce commodity. The only option is that all districts put in sincere efforts to conserve whatever rainwater is got. Interfering with the natural flow of water and creating diversion is nothing but inviting disaster upon ourselves for which nature will give a befitting reply and for that all will have to suffer. The people of D.K. cannot be taken for granted. In the name of development, Mangalore has been shorn of all its beauty, salubrious climate and natural resources to fulfill the needs and greed of few uncaring people.

I am supporting Yetthinahole project not because Congress is supporting or not because the BJP while in power the Late V.S. Acharya, Ex-Chief Minister Yeddy and Ex-Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda have had planned, uted and passed Yettinahole project.

In my opinion let us share excess water what we have and let our own brothers and sisters also quench their thirst and hunger.

At the same time the district administration should increase the height of the Thumbe Damm without wasting time. This should be accomplished on a war footing so as to quench our own hunger and thirst.

LET US ALL LIVE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF US.

    Dear Avi, Mangalore,
    Jai Sri Ram, Mangalore,

Why we are releasing excess water to tamilnadu???!!!

Therefore for our purpose sufficient water can be utilized. Determination and will power to utilize water at the best manner is required by the citizens.

Water Air and Light i s a free gift of God. Utilizing it freely to all is imminent and imperative.

Our Divers and Astronauts are flying beyond air pockets and take sufficient Air to Breath.

Mr. Joseph, you might know that during the flight if there is a in oxygen, instruction is that you first put your oxygen mask and after that help your family and other travelers. This is the same case here. Whole of DK is reeling under drought situation. Netravathi river is the only source of water for us. There is no question of sharing the Netravathi water with other regions, while we are in the grave need of drinking water. while other avenues are available for the people of other areas like Kolar / Chikkaballapur govt. should look around it and not concentrate on Netravthi river. Do you think thousand and thousands of people of DK doing the protest without any logic reason. We will be happy to help our brothers and sister on the other part of the state. But we need to take care of our need first. Is there any proven engineering plan, after implementing the Yettihole project will be a success. There is no guarantee. It's on trial and error basis. After 5 years govt. will change and we will go back to square one. Do you think national money should be wasted in an illogical project?
