Mangaluru, May 19: As part of the district bandh observed by the Nethravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti (NRSS) demanding to scrap the ongoing Yettinahole project, the organization held protest near Wenlock Hospital, Hampankatte by blocking the road here on Thursday May 19.
Slamming the state government over Yettinahole project, president of Samiti, Vijayakumar Shetty said, “Irrespective of religion, community, caste and even children of Bharat Mata joined and supported this protest. Our intention is to stop the river diversion and save the Nethravati river.”
“With support of these youths, we will stop this project which will harm the people of coastal region. In future, we will continue our struggle and we appeal for the cooperation of all people,” he added.
Addressing the protesters, Esha Vittaldas Swamijji of Kemaru Math said, “State government should come forward to scrap this project. People of Tulu Nadu without any discrimination on caste and religion should fight against this project.”
“I will always be ready to support the decisions of the committee against this project,” he added.
Fr J B Crasta said, “The peaceful bandh organized against Yettinahole project is a role model in entire district. In future our voice should reach Bengaluru demanding the government to stop this project.”
Speaking on the occasion, activist Dinesh Holla said, “Three and a half years ago, we gave a memorandum to state government to preserve the Western ghats. No projects should be implemented in Western ghats which would harm its natural beauty. Hence the government should stop this project which will harm the Western ghats as well the people of Dakshina Kannada.”
Sathyajith Surthkal, MG Hegde, Dinesh Shetty, Shashiraj Shetty Kolambe, Ananda Shetty Adyar and others were present during the protest.
