End to present woes-rainwater begins to flow into Thumbay dam

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 20: Mangaluru city was experiencing the worst ever drinking water problem this year till now. It seems that because of favourable conditions, the water woes will become things of the past. The rain experienced in coastal region since the last couple of days has begun to have an effect on the inflow into Thumbay vented dam which supplies water to the city. Although water was continuously pumped from the dam since Wednesday morning, water level showed only a marginal decrease from four feet to 3.7 feet during this period.

At the same time, the water released from Nekkilady dam two days back had not reached Thumbay dam till Thursday night. City corporation commissioner, H N Gopalakrishna, said he hopes that this water would flow into the dam on Thursday night.

In the meanwhile, the meteorological department has predicted normal to heavy rainfall in coastal districts on Friday. The district, which was enveloped in clouds on Thursday morning, experienced bright sunshine later. However, in the evening, the weather turned cloudy again. With the expectations of continued rainfall, the people see a ray of hope of their water woes getting addressed.

We will only make noise when we have a problem but fail to join together to put in place measures or take corrective actions to ensure next year we will not land in a similar situation only for this chapter to be opened next summer. In a few days we will reopen another chapter that was closed last August i.e. lack of drains for rain water to flow, potholes, damage to property etc. This cycle will continue as long as disruption to nature by humans continues. Politicians, bureaucrats & religious will be busy inaugurating new structures, tress will be cut, and more money will be swindled. We the people will leave ourselves to be divided and ruled.

Please, please take care of water. There are lots of taps which are left open by dont care users. Once monsoon is over, implement a timing for water distribution, to have sufficient water supply for the summer of 2017

Since the government has thousands of crores for the yettinahole project to supply water to other districts, can we expect our elected representatives to seek and implement a alternative and standby dam to Thumbe dam. This may be one of the ways to solve the water problems for our district. Yettinahole project is already in full swing and I see no hopes of the government abandoning it.

Yettinahole Project Tender = 12,500/- Crores. Escalation cost = 2500 Crores. Not to worry ( for the politicians ) . Its an ADB loan and may be the politicians think that this money need not be reimbursed with interest which our future generations will be burdened with. State taxes too will proportionately increase every year.

Our politicians want their salaries to be raised besides the other perks. Even their married children get benefits at the tax payers cost.

Please increase the height of the Thumbe dam to 30 feet at least. If not this water problem will be perennial.
