Mangalore, Nov 7: Delayed and disturbed by the Roads of Mangalore, yet Santa Claus makes an early entry into the city and welcomes the festive season…

Santa Claus made a delayed entry into the Chirstmas celebrations on Sunday November 4 at the St Sebastian Platinum Jubilee Hall, thanks to the now infamous potholes of our famous city.

The festive season saw an early advent with Christmas celebrations being organized by the KMC staff and students and their families at the St Sebastian Hall in the city. Apart from the regular celebrations, the event did not lose a chance to mock the poor condition of the roads in and around Mangalore. It was evident that the Mangalore residents were in no mood to forgive and forget, when the MC announced that Santa Claus made a delayed entry into the programme because of the worse condition of the Mangalore roads showing how exactly the poor condition of the roads has become a source of unbearable agony and pain for the people of this region.

The students and staff of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore celebrated the Christmas spirit by organizing a play that showed the events leading to the Birth of Jesus. Apart from the history of the event, the play sent a message to the society to promote harmony and togetherness at all times. The youth were encouraged to spend time with family, the elders and the young ones, rather than at modern day parties at clubs and posh places. Doctors from different specialties came together and planned the entire event which drew a houseful audience to witness the play and the carols sung by the choir. Shorju trained and experienced, enthralled the audience with his skills in playing the violin.

Advancing the celebrations so as to make it convenient for participation of majority of students keeping in mind the forthcoming university exams, the organizers explained it was more important to experience the feeling and the Christmas spirit at all times throughout the year rather than just for a few days around December 25 every year.

Senior and eminent doctors like Dr Thangam Joshua, Dr Maria Kuruvilla, Dr Sydney D'Souza, Dr Christopher Pais, Dr John T Ramapuram lead the team of organizers. Sharath Krishnaswamy directed the play in which students from different communities and countries took part. Mr and Mrs Oscar Weltha trained the choir.

Apart from taking a pick at the potholes of Mangalore, Santa Claus actually distributed gifts to children in the audience to draw a close to the beautiful evening.

After all advent is also a time period which has been artificially fixed...so i think its duration is open to interpretation...as has been the real date of christmas...anyway it symbolizes n event in which the love of God was personified...the meaning of which must remain with us throughout the year...

Yes, we do agree that normally X'mas is ushered in celebrations only after Advent. But what is commendable is that students and staff of KMC and MCODS have worked around very hectic and gruelling schedules and examinations to bring this function to fruition before they leave to thier homes for the actual Xmas vacation. Let us commend their initiative remember that the Spirit of Christmas should prevail in our hearts throughout the year and not be confined to a single day in the calendar.

ya I think it is a bit too early to have xmas n santa around d corner, but nevertheless, i would like to appreciate the effort of the staff n students. Having completed my student life recently i understand the feeling of not being able to participate in events coz of exams. So i think it is a good effort with a genuine heart. Keep it up. Seems to be a well organized programme.

Is it ok to have Christmas celebrations even before Advent? It seems that we are too much into celebrations and have lost track. Wish some religious person enlightens us in this matter. Years ago, weddings never took place in Advent. Looks like very soon, we will have weddings in Lent too.
