Rs 80-100 per kg now: Tomato prices to remain high for next 2 months

New Delhi, Jun 16 (PTI) : Tomato prices which have soared to Rs 80-100 per kg in retail markets across the country are likely to remain elevated for at least next two months as fresh crop is expected to hit markets only by August-end.

Normally, prices of tomato firm up in the off-season of June-September every year, but the sharp increase in rates this time was mainly due to the damage caused to the rabi crop because of a severe drought in southern states.

In the last 15 days, the rates have gone through the roof and the key vegetable is being sold at Rs 80-100 per kg by local vegetable vendors depending on the quality and locality.

For instance, in the national capital, tomato is being sold at Rs 58 a kg at Mother Dairy's Safal outlets and Rs 80 at Godrej's Nature Basket.

Online portal Bigbasket is selling tomato at Rs 55 in Delhi, Rs 70 in Kolkata, Rs 78 in Bangalore and Rs 79 in Chennai.

"Prices have gone up because of tight supply from the major growing states of the South where the rabi crop has been damaged during the flowering stage because of the severe drought," a senior Consumer Affairs Ministry official said.

"The fresh tomato crop is expected to arrive only in September and till then prices are expected to remain under pressure."

According to the government's initial calculations, tomato output is estimated to be higher by 4-5 per cent in 2015-16 over the last year. "It looks like the production figures may have to be revised downward when final estimates are to be released in September," the official added.

As per the latest government estimate, the country's tomato output is pegged at 18.28 million tonnes in the 2015-16 crop year (July-June) as against 16.38 million tonnes in the previous year.

Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are the major tomato growing states.

Yesterday, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had said the rise in tomato prices was a "seasonal factor" and the commodity cannot be procured using the Price Stabilisation Fund due to short-shelf life of the key vegetable.

The government is procuring pulses and onion to create a buffer stock to be used for controlling prices by boosting supply in the open market at a cheaper rate.

25 kg of Tomato or just 12 kg of Toor Daal is equal to fare from Mangalore to Mumbai by any domestic flight.
Do you know Why Aeroplane fare is reduced so low and Daal price is increased so high by Mid govt ?
The Answer is very simple - Adani and Ambani are importing and selling Daal, but both Ambani or Adani do not have any Airways company so far. When Ambani-Adani start their own Airways company then Acche Din will come for them and domestic flight fare will go up from Rs.2500/- to Rs.25,000/- suddenly.

Funniest thing is when one goes down, another one shoots up, other goes down third one shoots up, all are taking turns since last two years!

Rate of tomato has straightway shot up from 10 to 100 in 10 days, definitely hoarders have a big hand in this!

Relentless price rise of other essential commodities, less spoken the better!

Today a middle class person working in India has to be satisfied with rice gruel and pickle if his intention is to survive!

Rates of eggs go down drastically during summer and lime (nimboo) goes up, but since 2 years it is just shooting up and prices just don't come down, how come yaar!

    Latest is sugar!

From where will a ordinary clerk or laborer bring money to survive, they have to beg, borrow, or steal!

Prices now could be the highest in the world, shame on the planners who have brought unprecedented hardship on the common man!

Why there is no price regulation Act for farm produce in India? All agricultural products should be made compulsorily insured to avoid loss of crop to farmers. Do the farmers have always to cry for better price to their crop and suicide if there is crop loss?

Price hike is not a problem but our both political parties is the problem for India. Congress wanted to bring GST in 2005 but BJP objected. Now BJP want GST and congress is objecting. Congress wanted foreign investment and foreign countries were ready to invest but BJP objected and gave the reason that Congress is selling India to multinationals. Now our PM is visiting all the foreign countries and asking them to invest. We are squeezed between these 2 parties. Comon people of India are suffering i.e. If any BJP supporter is killed than BJP will call bund or agitation and if some of Congress supported killed than Congress people will call bund. Who are the sufferers??????

When petrol was $107/Barrel UPA managed to keep the price below Rs.70/=. Today Petrol prices are ped by 50 - 60% BJP Govt. has added taxes and the petrol is sold for Rs.70/=. Mr. Sandeep,

In which world were you until now ? Iran supplied oil to India on 'Food for Oil' basis as per UM Embargo on it. India could only pay in food products, never in monetary mode. Only when the embargo was lifted recently, Iran was eligible to receive payments.

Well, you have good news. Indian government has given a bonus to Iran on platter - 1.5% of outstanding amount, though the country did not ask for it. Iran is an Islamic country, for who, interest is forbidden. You tell me now - is BJP managing a surplus budget that such an offer was inevitable ?
