Udupi, Jun 16: Drainage water which flows in a private land behind Shiribeedu towers near Udupi city bus stand for the last several days has become breeding place for mosquitoes with unbearable stench.
The rain water also joins the drainage water at the place making it a hub of mosquito breeding ground.
The seasonal fevers like malaria, dengue and other epidemics are on the rise with many people being admitted to hospitals. In this backdrop, the indifference of city municipal council towards cleaning these places has irked the locals.
Locals alleged that they had complained about it to the council last week but the officials have taken no action so far.
The drainage water has also contaminated the well water nearby making it unfit for drinking, locals said.
Local resident Sandeep alleged that mosquitoes which breed in the stagnant drainage water are the reason behind spreading malaria and dengue fever.
“The problem occurs when the drainage water meets with rain water. The council should wake up and solve the problem immediately. If not done, then people will be suffering with the spread of malaria. Mosquitoes are already breeding in the stagnant water. Therefore the council should take immediate action,” said local doctor Raviraj Bhandary.
