Mangaluru: When will lightning arresters save valuable human lives?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Jun 27: Lightning during the beginning of monsoons especially in the rural areas, cause destruction of properties and losses of human lives. The district administration in a meeting presided by Deputy Commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim in 2014 had informed about precautions to be taken during lightning. It was decided then to install lightning arresters in areas which are increasingly prone to lightning.

The proposals after identifying such places were obtained from Taluk tahasildars. It was decided to install 11 arresters in five taluks of the DK district. Kalanja Varanasi Building Solution Company was asked to submit quotations. This company provided technical report with the estimated cost.

Lightning arresters with copper cables costing Rs 22.98 lacs each can stop lightning damage up to an area of 20 kilometres. The proposal for Rs 25 lacs including other expenses was submitted to the revenue department with a request to release the funds.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has said that the proposal has been sent to the government and an approval is awaited. It is intended to install two small lightning arresters in Puttur on an experimental basis, he said.

Even after two years of taking a decision, people are still waiting to see the lightning arresters installed. They are surprised to hear that government needs so much of time to approve a necessary proposal and to sanction such a small amount.

High rise buildings help the current build up to get discharged to the ground with so many iron reinforcement inside them grounded.
The same way Cell phone Towers too act to help dissipate the electrical charge built up in clouds & ground giving earth to discharge instead of sudden lightening strike destroying trees or property along with fatal consequences.
The "Faraday Cage" effect of these structures helps without affecting those in the nearby areas.
Invite cell phone companies to set up their towers in the villages benefiting the people & the phone companies to increase their revenue as well.

To have a radius of protection of 20kms you may need a tower of 2 to 3 kms high with active components. Not viable. However, you can have a 200m tower protecting a small high risk village.

No standard either IEC or IS claims a protection area of 20kms. This is impossible. People die because of step voltage during a lightning hit. This is because of ground potential rise.So this claim is utterly false and a waste of tax payers money.
Moreover copper will not survive more than a month unless you have a security guard with impeccable character.

To install lightning arrestor is very simple, the antenna is on the high roof and connected with a pure copper strip then grounded below 12 feet with coal / salt at 1500 ohms it will cover a radius of 1 km

It is good to have lightning arrestors to safeguard human life and domestic animals. However even though the lightning arrestors are installed by spending Rs 2.5 Million for each station. However do we need a security guard to protect the lightning arrestor station, hope this will be an additional OPEX.

Village and forest areas are best place to leave during summer season but during rainy season it is worst place to leave, not only worst it is dangerous due lightning. Most of the victims of lightning are agriculturist and labourers who leave and work in fields where lightning easily strikes them. It is very important for govt to look at this matter to save villagers who provide food to the city people. So much money is spent/wasted for various development then why not spend few money for this purpose.

Mr. Mallar, Kasaragod/Dubai: I had built my house in 1996-1997, and before occupying it, had installed the Lightning Arrester on the top of my house, as my house is on a high elevated place, and there were no trees either coconut or other trees around our house then. But on July 7, 1997, there was heavy lightening and it passed over our house without any damage to our house. But people leaving in the vicinity of our house and leaning to their house walls, felt the jerk of the lightening and it struck my brother in laws house which is about an aerial distance of I Km, from my house, at Kannur, Mangalore, National Highway, inspite of heaving cocunut trees sorrounding his house but no Lightening Arrester. There was damage to to his house fans, Electric Meter etc. and the home people had seen the lightning strike like fire ball in front of their house. We were saved because of the Lightening Arester on the top of our house. Normally lightning strikes to the highest point either coconut tree or any other tree, or open ground like agricultural fields if there are no high trees around nearby. Two years ago, lightening struck to two tall coconut trees at my brothers place, which were destroyed, without any damage to the house. Lightening Arrester protects.

Sorry to tell. Since Government officials don't have the habit bribing Government I pre-suppose the work is pending.
It's only a lay man who suffers in between government & Schemes proposed by government.

Install lightning arresters without further delay.
It's frightening/terrifying to come across thunderbolt & lightning. It looks like due to the climatic change even the intensity of lightning & thunder has gone extreme)

GOOD MOVE FROM THE D.C., APPRECIABLE.

When the British were ruling they have erected lightning arrests in the mountains.

After British left Indians took away all the copper and sold it and made money.

Poor people died as a result of peoples selfishness.
