Mangaluru, Jun 28: Dakshina Kannada District School Vehicle Drivers Association staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office here on Tuesday June 28, opposing fines and certain rules that restricted drivers from operating school vehicles in the city.

Speaking at the occasion Sunil Kumar Bajal, district secretary of CITU said "In the wake of Trasi incident, the police officials have been stopping the vehicles and imposing fines. We do not oppose imposing fines on overcrowded school ferrying vehicles, but they have been imposing fines on autos which are carrying even 3 children and Omni' which are carrying 8 children as well. District administration is quiet on the school authorities not allowing the school vehicles entering the premises."

"The district administration has made it a point that only vehicles painted yellow can operate as school vehicles. This rule has hit hard many drivers who have been ferrying children to schools in their vehicles and have made it their profession. Painting their vehicles yellow would greatly inconvenience them as they cannot use the vehicle other than for ferrying school children. Most of the vehicles ferrying children are tourist vehicles and it would be a burden for them if they paint yellow." he added.

"It is not the administration which should alone decide the rules and regulations. Instead they should call us together, discuss and decide. Deputy Commissioner should convene the meeting with parents, school authorities and then decide and review meetings should be conducted once in three months. Every school should form school children's safety association and regular checking should be conducted and actions should be taken on vehicles ferrying more number of children." he said.

We urge the district administration to withdraw the cases booked against vehicles and request the department to book cases only against violators and not on everyone. Instead of painting the vehicles yellow, boards can be put stating that it is a ‘School Van'. If justice is not given to us, then we will stop the service and conduct severe protest throughout the district." he warned.

The association also submitted a memorandum to the DC requesting him to ensure justice to the drivers. Several members of the association as well as drivers of school vehicles participated in the protest.

Great, the market just opened up for yellow paint. Can visualize the ads... "Go yellow and your children will be safe and protected", maybe the carwash too can cash in with an age old "turmeric wash"
.... but then wasn't it a yellow painted bus that hit the omni!??

Bus was more responsible for the tragedy!. Why no action against buses!?. DC should strictly implement speed governors in all city and service buses, remove blaring vacuum horns (once in a year this drama is done!), remove tape recorders in all buses and install GPS. If they protest, immediately start government buses.

The vehicle's which ply children on a daily basis should have their vehicle's painted yellow. By the way what have the district administration decided on the capacity i.e., the number of children to be carried. The capacity should also be strictly applied to the Pvt. city buses who make good amount of money by fooling people, were no tickets are issued and the RTO corrupt to the core and always in slumber, wake to become a smart city. Are the authorities waiting for another tragedy.

Even private bus was responsible for accident but action is only on Omni vans and rickshaws. How safe are our city buses ? I have seen students stand/lean on bus doors and travelling in the morning and evening on 6C, 6D city buses in MANGALORE. Administration should have given enough time for parents/schools to look for alternative arrangement. and should have given extra time to Omni/Rickshaw transporters also.

If these school van drivers cannot follow the rules, then they should leave to other people, who are ready to abide by rules. Other jobless responsible drivers can take up this business with the help of bank loans.

RTO and DC SHOULD KEEP THE PRESSURE, This long time Problems must be solved, but unfortunately, even after this accident in Trasi a lot of people/drivers choose to complain, worry, and cry about them, they are not worried about the kids. Mangalore will always be a place of chaos and disorder...

Best idea to School to run good transport system of their own with good vehicle and transportation team,
Institution can also earn reasonably and provide employment opportunities..

Some amendments to the newly imposed traffic rules/regulation need to be done as requested by the School bus drivers and private vehicle owners.
Due present rules, Police seem to be taking advantage to earn extra bucks. Good opportunity indeed.

I'm expecting these kind of protest at day when checking starts after sad incident happened in Kundapur. Protest is natural because, rules implemented suddenly without giving time for manage the current situation of school duty vehicles. District commissioner should call an meeting & explain the rules & regulation by giving certain time to fix the issues. About yellow paint, as I read in news papers, many private vehicles running school duty on peak hours. Other time they are doing their regular duty. Its right that, its bit tough to paint an private vehicle. For that, udupi SP suggested to put an visible board as " On School Duty". In India, our authorities only woke up after serious incident until few day & again they sleep until next incident.

The core task of schools is to provide education, not run transport company. Schools don't take liability in case of legal disputes or accidents. It is good idea to outsource so that others too can earn their livelihood.

As far as my knowledge School Children carrying vehicles drives safely and school administration also advises to its drivers to drive safely. Express Busses, tankers, trucks trailers and city busses speed need to Control. In Trasi Bus hit the school carrying vehicle.

    Peter Lewis,

Express Busses, tankers, trucks trailers and city busses are heavy vehicles. A heavy vehicle carries a lot of momentum. Even if you set a limit of 40 kmph, they will do a lot of damage to a any smaller vehicle at that speed. Now there is no way you can set a speed of 40kmph on highway. Most realistically it will be set at 60kmph.

Transporting school children by omni like cows and Calves must be stopped. School bus drivers should change their attitude and follow the traffic rules and regulations first. Don't play with innocent lives.
